No one owns a non-profit organization.

A common misperception is that they're called non-profit organizations because they can't ever have a profit (surplus). That's not true at all. In fact, it's best for all business entities to run a profit in order to not go under.

Non-profit organization are called that because no one is permitted to reap profits from the non-profit organization.

If the IRS thinks certain people are reaping profits from the non-profit organization, the organization's non-profit status can be revoked.

As mentioned, no one owns a non-profit. In fact, if you start one, and it becomes worth a lot, you can't personally get the gain. If your board sells the organization, the money usually has to be distributed to other non-profits in the service area.

No. The board of directors oversees the nonprofit, but it's not 'owned' in the sense you mean. As to the person who starts it, the board can kick them out, which happened to Candy Lightner at Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and the founder of the American Red Cross. However, if you're worried about being kicked out by the board, then you end up with a weak board that's powerless and not helpful, because you're more concerned with keeping your job than with getting a good board of directors.

It's not owned by anyone but is controlled by a volunteer board of directors. They're over seen by your major funder and/or the laws depending on where you live.
