Here are some name suggestions...

Hammy or Hammie (my personal fav. also one of my neighbors named their hamster hammy and it NEVER bie and I named my hamster Hammy and it NEVER bit! Guess hamsters like that name)

Mr. Whiskers (i had a hamster named Mr. Whiskers but, i had to get rid of him cuz he was hurting my hammy!!)

Coa-Coa

Beary

Cake

Brownie

Terd (lol)

Teddy

George

Mr. Hammy

About the hamster being scared...
Hamsters are always jumpy! So if you are SURE he is scared then put him in his cage and let him get used to his new home. After a few hours, take him out and pet him.

Also, hamsters love toys. Especially hamster balls!! You can also give your hamster empty paper towel rolls, they chew on them and crawl in them.

***TIPS***
Don't give your hamster newspaper! It can harm there skin.
I wouldn't suggest a plastic, cool, tubey cage. Hamsters can escape very easily from them, they can get stuck in a tube, and those cages are VERY hard to clean!! I would suggest a 10 gallon glass tank, with a wheel, place to sleep, toys, and of course, food and water in it! But if you already have the other cage it doesnt matter. But glass cages are better from my experience!

Some hamsters will chatter a lot, as babies especially. One of mine would constantly chatter in my ear until she was about 6 months old, after that she went quieter, but still the noisiest hamster I've ever owned.

If he is scared, he'll need security. If he's still like it when you clean him out, leave 1/2 the old bedding/nesting material. Also have a solid colour house, if you don't already. Semi-seethrough ones are becoming more popular, but the poor hamster can't get any darkness. But in truth, if he's playing, he's not too scared, scared hamsters generally try to hide, and lie flat on the floor.

I'd say name him Teddy, and for the shock, if you just got him, leave him alone in his cage for a while to get settled. Don't try to touch him until you've owned him for about a week, and try to limit the amount of times you stick your hand in the cage. Make sure he has enough food and water, and a thin cloth to cover the cage for a week may help too.

he is chattering b/c he is only scared. mine is doing the same thing right now i got her yesterday...just let it get used to its cage and gently talk to it, then maybe wear some gloves and put some food on your palm try that for awhile.. and see what happens from there.
midnightis a good name since its black w/ a little white =)

name him bear, it perfectly fits him. about the scared part, just don't bug him. I just got a new black rabbit today and i just left her with a clean cage and clean water and some food, and she was happy and relaxed after about an hour. your friend just needs some time to get used to things and without you bugging him.

try to take it out, but only if it will let you without trying to bite you. if it tries to bite you, then just start out by trying to pet it in the cage. give them treats. try to feed him by giving him the treat, NOT throwing it in his cage!

I named all of my hamsters: tweety, pewee, stuart little, and angel!

I should know what to do for hamsters because i had about 20 of them my whole life!

and one more piece of advice! listen!!! what ever you do, make sure your hamster is NOT attached to you if he bites you before you take your hand out. I did that a few times where the hamster was still on me, and i flung my hand out, then my hammy went "smack" on the wall! BE CAREFUL NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO TO YOU!!!
