You certainly can do that, and many beginners books for young children subscribe to that method. You would be playing the top three strings by the way. The bottom string would be low E (6th string) and the first string would be the skinny one that is farthest away from you, high E (1st string)

I would recommend that you start with the first four strings however. These would be the same strings used by the tenor guitar or baritone ukulele. You could even temporarily remove the bottom two strings (5th string A and 6th string E) so they wouldn't get in your way.

You may not find a lot of information to help you out with E / B/ and G, but there is quite a bit of information concerning tenor guitar and baritone ukulele.

Using the G, the B, and the bottom E strings will produce chords because a chord is made up of three or more notes on a given scale.

Additionally, the bottom strings may be used in lead picking--often using the B and the E strings only. While these three strings can form basic chords, the foundation is often lacking such as a good bass note to give the chord some oomph.

p.s. Don't get lazy on us; learn the basic six-string chords and use them!

Well, the D maj & min chords are played using the bottom 3 strings, so it is possible to play all chords using that fingering, sorta like barre chords.

Theres nothing stopping you from playing like this, just , like some1 said before, it can be limiting.

I learned using EBG - the highest strings. I had little hands and you can strum those 3 and finger a C,F and G7 easily.
