I have an extremely old pentium 3 550mhz processor, with 384mbs of ram and a 20 gig hard drive. I dont know what the smallest linux that doesnt run off a live cd is. I have used slax portable linux but i want a permanently installed os (preferably with a kde interface and maybe looks like ubuntu) and I dont want to permanenly install slax becuase it still functions as a live cd, just running from the hard drive.

So the bottom line is, I need a list of small sized linux OS's with links to a download. remember, I am choosing a best answer.

Thanks!!

why? I have run ubuntu, kubuntu and opensuse from the live cd. on a old 286 system with 128 meg of ram and a 100 meg hard drive (not installed)
kubuntu as the KDE interface
opensuse as the KDE and Gnome interface you can setup both interfaces,
and the 20 gig hard drive is more than enough to run both the systems, Slax and what ever other linux, you just need to know how to partition the hard drive and install the software you will need ....
then there is damsmallinux and xubuntu.
Linux will run on anything.
download kubuntu from the link below

Damn Small Linux, is by far the best small Linux out there. It's only 49 MB and it is a live cd with hard disk install option. This is the best option for your pc.

Ubuntu itself is perhaps the smaller size permanent install. What issue do you have with Live CD? I know that once in an HD, it became as configurable as a normal permanent install; the live I am using has prevision to write itself in everywhere writing is expected.

It is not the size but squeezing any horse power; and Gentoo is known for just able to do that.

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

that one will run off a small flash drive. 50 megabytes total install.

this is a little bigger, will run smoothly on a 286, so it should fly on yours http://www.vectorlinux.com/

this one is probably your best bet though, far more popular, so you will get better support.
