I just got a Weiner Dog from my brother who kept food out all day for the dog. I know this is not proper feeding for a dog. Can anyone tell me the correct feeding schedule? The dog is a male, 1 year old, about 10 lbs.

if the dog is doing well with free feeding it isn't a bad thing to do. It doesn't sound like he's over weight...so you could just keep leaving food down. Otherwise twice a day is right for a small deep chested dog. Two smaller meals are always better than one.

If you don't want to do free choice, you can start with 3 feeds a day, then gradually reduce it to once daily. Some like to feed twice daily, this may depend on your dog and you. It may be a little tough at first as the doxie is used to eating when it's hungry and must now adjust to a time schedule. It may not eat for the first two meals, then be pretty hungry by dinner time. Be sure it doesn't overeat then as it may bloat and this will be painful and possibly serious. Try just putting out a third of what you would have fed if it's not eaten the rest of the day, then another third maybe a half hour later, ditto the rest. This will give the dog a chance to settle and not overeat.

I have a 3 year old Mini Pin that weighs 8 lbs. Both of these breeds are subject to being overweight. My Vet has me feeding him 1/3 cup of dry food 2 times day. Morning and Evening. For a 10 lb dog I would think that 1/2 to 1 cup of food twice a day would be sufficient. You can always call a Vet's Office and ask them. Do not call a Pet Store. They are not Professionals. If this dog is use to just "grazing" off and on through the day and it is NOT overweight I see no reason to change his Diet.

My husband and I have 2 doxies! We love all our animals and treat them as we would a human child. They have sweaters for the freezing Chicago weather, more toys than some human children, and we make NO exceptions when it comes to veterinary care. These "animals" are our CHILDREN! They always have food and treats. I am currently painting a wooden toy chest just for them. We love to spoil them! It is part of being responsible for a life. There is nothing wrong with what you're doing. Many people do the same thing. However, if you are young (under 18, I am assuming?) then there really isn't much you can do about your mom. If you were older you could move out and take Pickle with you. You can never change how your mom feels about your pup. I was raised that animals are living, breathing, feeling things. They are just like a child and deserve the same kind of care and attention. Maybe you could, respectfully, say to your mom, "OK, mom, that's how you feel but that isn't necessarily how I feel. And when you say those things it is upsetting to me and makes me feel like my opinions don't matter."

actually once aday if 1 year old but since he is use to free choice I would suggest starting with 3 feedings a day for about 2 weeks then 2 feedings for about 2 weeks then just once a day.
