Even 20 years ago it was acceptable to treat your dogs bits of chocs....and in those days it wasnt just the "essence and flavour of rich dark chocolate" it was real thing.
Unless your dog devours a pound of good chocolate, he is usually safe.
It's great to be concern about your dog, but this is hysteria.

Peple should never feed their dogs chocolate, period! It;s like playing russian roulette, however, freeking out that my dog ate an M&M or a piece of Oreo cookie is not necessary.

Several years ago my lab mix ate an entire bag of those little foil covered chocolate eggs. I knew chocolate was bad for dogs so researched it and found that one pound of chocolate could kill a 10 pound dog. She was over 50 lbs and ate about 1/2 lb of chocolate so I didn't worry and she was fine. I was a little concerned that she might not have peeled the foil off all of them, but that ended up okay too.

I myself have seen a 7 lb. Chihuahua go into a coma and die from eating a 1 ounce piece of bakers chocolate. No one is panicking over an oreo cookie or a few M & M's, but face it, chocolate IS toxic. These are dogs, not little people we are dealing with when it comes to body chemistry. Onions also destroy red blood cells if they eat enough of them (want to give your dog just a little bit of onion and only kill "some" rbc's??). Recently raisins have been shown to cause kidney problems in some dogs. Are these foods worth fooling with? Not to me.

yeah, i agree. Sometimes a little information is a pain in the butt. I can't tell you how many times here i have seen "OH MY GAWD, my dog just ate a chocolate chip!!! IS HE GOING TO DIE???"
chocolate isn't good for dogs. So we don't intentionally give it to them. Nor do we give them raisins or onions or gatorade...
i have a dog who once ate a pound of raisins...fortunately i know how to make her puke. If more people spent time learning a little basic dog first aid instead of worrying about chocolate chips it'd be a good thing.

I completely agree - as the owner of a dog who has ingested a few choco chip cookies . . . I think that people were going a bit overboard. And since the dog yacked it all up - it's out - that's what the vet would do/tell you to do - induce vomiting - the dog did that already - the dog should be fine. I look at it this way - now she doesn't have to deal with shoving hydrogen peroxide down its throat and waiting for the thing to upchuck it all.
I also am not condoning the eating of chocolate in dogs, but when a dog eats chocolate and then throws it all up it's a little bit different than when a dog eats a pound of dark chololate!

Does chocolate even benefit dogs...? What's the point of eating it if it doesn't help it hinders. Just because you like it doesn't mean your dog likes it. My dog used to eat his own poop if he already thinks it's good whats so good about chocolate. If you were allergic to apples or they were poisonous would you feed your kids apples because a little doesn't hurt? It's not like your dog knows. 20 years who cares it it was 5 years ago. That doesn't make it suseptible to feed the dogs chocolate. If you wanna kill your dog because of idiocy well I really don't know what to say to you..

Knowing which chocolate is the most toxic is important, but leaves one wondering how much must be eaten to poison a dog. The list in this box should be helpful. Maybe you can clip it and post it on your refrigerator?
White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog.
Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers' chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

Wow are you way off base. 20 years ago veterinary medicine was in the dark ages compared to now. Now we know what we can and can't feed our dogs.
Your telling people it's ok to feed their dog chocolate is just irresponsible of you.

It wasn't "acceptable"... we didn't know better!
Chocolate is bad for dogs. Face it.
(And it's a waste of chocolate!)
AND... now we learned raisins and grapes are bad for them too. See? We're learning... and you have to take these little bits of info and move on and you too will have a healthy, happy dog for many years to come!

Tell that to the people whose dogs have had heart attacks, have developed diabetes, or who have died due to chocolate.. if you want to give your dogs chocolate that's fine.. Risk their lives and health. But don't tell people that it's an okay thing to do..
