I dont and never will....it is a disgrace! For a layman to be handing out our Lord in the Blessed Sacramnet. I hope and pray that the Pope will re-think this horrible act that is comitted in many churches

Amen, brother!

"One to five thousand communicants and the priest is on the other side of 80 and has arthritis." -- Cardinal Francis Arinze, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, on when extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may be used.

How would you suggest it be handled?

My parish has well over 2,500 families registered and a lot of them show up for mass. Now, every family has two adults (mother and father), so now we have 5,000 for communion. Assuming there are two children of age for communion you are looking at 10,000. Obviously not all show up for mass at the same time since we have 2 masses on Sunday and two on Saturday - but you are still looking at 2.500 at each mass.

Were it not for the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (of which I am one) how long do you think mass would take on any given day?

I can honestly say, we are very well trained in the methods, theology and respect that this position is due.

As someone said earlier, if our Lord can wash the feet of a fisherman, why can't a truck driver (or in my case a secretary) deliver the Eucharist to another who is "hungry"?

I find it offensive when you say it is a disgrace for me to share the body of the Lord with those in my parish. We are all one body in the Lord and we all share in that same mystery of His death and resurrection.

None of us is worthy of holding or consuming the flesh of our Lord. But in some cases, people are eager to receive from a layman..someone just like them. They realize that Christ can work with and through any of us, no matter how lowly, unworthy or insignificant we might seem.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion do receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence. And all ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine.

If there were anything wrong with lay people doing so, it certainly would not be allowed in Canon Law.

God bless.

When there is not enough assistants such as deacons or associate priests thats when the Eucharistic ministers come in. If you belong to a large congregation as I do and only 1 priest and 1 or 2 deacons(we dont have an associate priest) we need the Eucharistic ministers, or it would take hours to complete the Eucharist feast. They are trained very well.

Yes, I do agree with it, and have served as one. I find it a disgrace that you would not want shut ins and people who are in hospitals and nursing homes to receive Holy Communion. I live where the priest often has to drive long distances to reach all his people. This "horrible act" as you put it allows some people who due to physical reasons that cannot attend mass still be able to receive communion. As my Gramma would say "Shame on you for being selfish." I pray for you that the day never comes that you are bedridden (as my Mother is at this moment) and there is no one available to bring you Holy Communion. I am GRATEFUL to the wonderful people (not always the priest) who have brought her Communion and visit with her awhile. These people are doing God's work whether or not they are ordained.
Peace be with you.

Eucharistic Ministers are trained and certified and perform their duties as detailed in their Licenses. If you do not like that, that is your right. It changes nothing.
