It's possible he doesn't like the litter you are using. I would try cleaning out the box completely and changing the litter. What is the box sitting on...a rug, towel, etc? I had a cat who for some reason like the rug under the box better so I put a rubber mat down under the box. It worked.

You need to have a vet do a urinalysis TOMORROW to see if the cat has crystals in his urine causing painful urination. Two days is great and don't put the vet trip off as you do NOT want to let him get in the habit of not using his litterbox.

Stress will frequently bring on a urinary problem and stress is a given when a cat goes into a new home. Dry cat food is also the worst diet for male cat.

If you go to: http://www.littlebigcat.com you can read for an hour in the article library there. There are four articles on Litterbox Secrets. Also read the articles "Why Cats Need Canned Food", "Urinary Tract Disorders in Cats", and "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food".

Get on this RIGHT AWAY. The longer it goes on the harder it will be to correct.

Has he been checked for medical issues, things like UTI's can cause inappropriate elimination.

Has he been neutered? Unneutered cats will often spray, getting them neutering generally fixes the problem.

Are you using the same type of litter/litterbox as he had before? Some cats don't do well with change and you should use what he was used to at least in the beginning, you can try to switch him gradually to something else later.

Also remember the rule for litterboxes is that for each cat, you need 2 boxes. And they need to be cleaned daily as well.

I have a couple of options for you...

1. take him/her to the littler box and take his paws and dig in the litter with them... then let him/her go about doing his/her own thing...

2. might be the litter... may have a fragrance or texture that he/she doesn't like... check with the place u adopted him from and see what kind of litter they used...

3. go to ur local petsmart and ask for a spray that u can spray in the litter box to attract ur cat to it...

4. if your cat pees in the same location everytime u can move the litter box to that location or get a deterant spray from petsmart

5. if all those fail check with a vet may be a sign of kidney problems

Talk to a pet psychic like normal people do.

I'm sorry. I had to say it.
Anyway, you might want to see a vet. It could be the sign of a bladder problem. If not, they always have good advice.
Also, there are these scented pads that are used for training dogs... I don't know if something like that exists for cats, but it's worth a look.
Also, try going to Petsmart or something like that. The people there are helpful and have probably dealt with this before.
