Must kittens and cats drink milk? This is one of those cat questions that confuse most new cat owners as well as the general public. Kittens need to drink THEIR MOTHER'S milk while they are nursing. It is full of the fat and protein that they need to grow rapidly and survive.

Cats and kittens can drink COW's milk OCCASIONALLY but they do not need to drink it. A cat can easily live its whole life without ever having cow's milk. Most feral or wild cats never have cow's milk.

Like humans, many cats and kittens are lactose intolerant. They cannot digest cow's milk properly and they get diarrhea or gastric upset when they drink it. Kittens that become lactose intolerant usually only become intolerant after they are about 3 months of age, so THEIR mother's milk shouldn't cause any gastric upset. If your cat or kitten gets diarrhea as a result of drinking cow's milk, stop giving it milk and it should pass. Some cat owners who have lactose intolerant cats that are 'milkaholics' do occasionally give them lactose free milk. You can find lactose free milk in pet stores. If your cat digests milk without a problem then you can give it the occasional milk treat.

Can Cats Drink Cows Milk

NO, he can NOT drink cow's milk. Cats and dogs are lactose intolerant.

Kittens once weaned do NOT NEED MILK. They do JUST FINE on water. All they need is water, vitamins and good food. I have raised 4 barn cats and never even gave them the kitten formula because it cost money, and water doesn't. There IS a formula called KMR if you can afford it and just feel you have to feed some kind of formula.

Get milk for your kitten at the pet store because they have the right kind. And no the kitten can't drink the milk you drink because the kitten can get diarrhea.

Kittens are likely to not be able to digest the same milk as humans drink. Yes he can drink his mother's milk and may enjoy drinking other milk too but it is likely to not be absorbed by him...

Kittens need their mother's milk until they are weaned, and then they do not drink milk again. I would not give a cat cows' milk. Cows' milk is for baby cows, not for cats and not for humans.

My cat used to like the occasional sip of soy milk. I asked the vet, and she said that soy milk or soy ice cream would not hurt her in small amounts.

SweetSour has given you a very good response. It just isn't worth it with a kitten because if he IS lactose intolerant you will have a great mess on your hands to say nothing of the discomfort it cause in his young digestive system.

Its quite bad for them as cats are lactose intolerant. A lot of people don't know that, but they are. If you want to give it milk give it KMR or some milk formula made specifically for cats. He will be just as happy, believe me.

their mother's milk when they are still nursing, yes. cow's milk....no. cat's are lactose intolerant. they may like to drink real milk, but they will usually throw it up.
I have found a couple alternatives called Cat Sip and also Whiskas makes a lactose free milk substitute that some of my cats like to drink...and it doesn't make them sick.

Yes they do enjoy it but it is too rich for them and will usually make them either sick or just queesy. You can buy special cat milk but to be honest they dont need it in their diet so stick to plain water you never miss what you never had.
