This was just out of curiousity because I have an autistic brother and I have noticed recently that no one really knows or cares about autism.

Some mental illnesses are overlooked, or diagnosed late because it is hard sort out the various causes of inapropriate behaviour.

I have a 14 year old neice who can be very odd. She's quite a drama queen. Very rebellious. Loves to say things just for shock value. Is very reclusive.

So why is she that way?
Bi-polar Disorder (runs in the family)
Poor up-bringing (disfunctional family)
Difficulty responding to greif (her brother died 2 years ago.)
Normal Teen-age problems
or a combination of some or all of the above?

It's not like there's a blood test or anything!

No one cares about autism? The View devoted a solid hour to autism. And Oprah! MSNBC had an hour special they ran many times!

Many of my favorite shows have characters one might claim is on the spectrum. (Grissom on CSI - The kid on Criminal Minds - Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent - Monk - the title character on Bones)
And several shows have an episode involving an autistic child. Ghost Whisperer. Law & Order, Missing, Cold Case Files, CSI, The District, House.
I'm aware of this because I search for any show ivolving autism with my satelite.

Mental illnesses are not over looked. Its the responsibility of the parents to seek out help and get the right interventions for the child. There are many organizations for those with Autism and each and every day research is being done to find the cause so we can one day find a cure for it. Check out this link...http://www.autismspeaks.org/community/resources/index.php Hope this helps :)

People are afraid of the unknown and are afraid to find out.
Autism has been getting a lot of press lately. There seems to be an epidemic of autism in the USA. Or is it that people are becoming more aware than they ever were?

I'm not sure what you mean; was he diagnosed by a doctor?
Or is that your opinion that he has autism?
