Those who live by the typo, shall die by the typo. I cannot believe is spelled it BEAS. I hadn't had dinner, and perhaps I was thinking PEAS.
PEAS FORGIVE ME. ;-)

I think the fundies would tell you that it is all God's plan. That's the way he ordered it.

But rational people see the ordering of social hierarchies and dynamic organization in the natural world and realize that this lays a very good precdent for the kind of social structures we have. Only now that we have intelligence, we can actually collaborate on laws and structures and test them and improve on them. Social evolution must proceed very fast when our kind of intelligence is involved

These chemical robots that you listed are of various complexity. The level of complexity of their behavior would be their level of consciousness. Ants would be controlled more by genetic hardwiring than apes, but all are mainly controlled by it. The complexity of the social structure increases with brain complexity and cosciousness, as well, but the initial organization of HAVING a society is definitely genetic.

Morality isn't the same thing as evolutionary success, which is what produced those social species. Morality should include some pretty odd ideas that may NOT lead to evolutionary success, like avoiding participation in the food chain. Frankly, making new conscious animals (reproduction) isn't moral, but someone may think that point is debatable.
