I'm planning on joining the Air Force sometime within the next year. Before I decide on anything specific, or get pushed into something I don't want by a recruiter, I was trying to get some job choice help. I know a lot of what I can choose between deals with my test scores, but still... So are there any recommended jobs for a woman in the Air Force? Specifically a woman with a child (aka: a job where I'm unlikely to be deployed where my child can't follow, such as Iraq).

I'm not asking for special preference or anything like that - I'm just asking which jobs are more likely to be deployed to "undesirable" locations. For example, I would assume a mechanic would be sent overseas asap.
Also, I took practice ASVABs online at military.com and scored high in everything but mechanical aptitude.

The Air Force is a good choice as they are family friendly..more so than the other branches. That being said, you will be expected to have child care that can accomodate any schedule and a plan in place in you are deployed or sent to a duty station where dependents are not allowed (called a remote or unaccompanied tour...they are pretty typical). You will also be expected to have plans in place for child care if the child is sick. You command will do it's best to let you stay home with a sick child (you will more than likely have to use leave days to accomodate it) but there can be instances where they will not be able to accomodate you and you need to be prepared for that.
As for jobs...all military career fields are deployable..period. The military has outsourced many of the "safer" jobs. Areas that are less likely to deploy..finance, administrative support. There are VERY FEW 9-5 type jobs in the military anymore, especially for the lower enlisted ranks. Jobs most likely to deploy..security forces, medical and anything connected to aircraft.
Hope this helps

Almost likely that you will get deployed so if you don't want to go to Iraq, I would think about getting a different non military job. There are no guarantees about any job not getting deployed. They deploy many single parents. That is why you need to have a child care plan in place once you get to your first duty station. And that has to include both a short term and long term care provider. All single parents and dual military people need them.
And of course there is Korea, most likely if you get sent there, your child will not be able to go with you either. You can ask and request but there is tons of paperwork and most often it is no.
good luck with whatever decision you make

Are you married? You wont be able to join if you are single and have a child.
If you're married (or willing to give up custody until after you get settled in the military and you trust that person enough to give you custody back) then personnel would be the way to go, but you can still deploy, it's just least likely and least amount of time.

it's impossble to make a "reccomendation" when you haven't taken te ASVAB or even spoken with a recruiter! There is no job in the AF which does not deploy. You will deploy for a minimum of 4 months a year. My husband is on his sixth deployment right now.
I commend you wanting to join the AFas a single mom. But do not ever think that will make you special or get preferential treatment. The mission comes first THEN your family. Our next door nighbor was a signle parent who worked in Admin and she recenly got back from a NINE month tour in Iraq.

All jobs pay the same. You can probably cross-train once your in assuming you do a good job, have good attitude, and have good enough ASVAB scores for the career field you want to enter. Basically, if you do a good job your superiors will take care of you, if you're a dirtbag, you'll get treated like a dirtbag. Piercings as long as they aren't visible, besides ears. I don't know about tattoos, I'll reference you to the correct AFI, you'll have to research.

uhmm maybe I am wrong but I thought that you had to ensure that you had child care covered IE you give care and control of your child to another person....
seems a bit unfair that you would pick a job that made you so special you never went away, if it bothers you that much then do not join the military I would love a father to post that question and see the replies he got...............
am not knocking you for having kids or for going in to the military but if [and am assuming you are a single parent here] why should you be able to and then get to not uphold you end of the bargain.........be battle ready.
regards and will see the other replies with interest am sure that some one will have the right reply for you

I would suggest something like personnel and putting a station like Keflavik Iceland on my dream sheet. There's almost always a need there and it's a controlled tour.

There are no guarantees you won't be deployed.
It you cannot accept this, then forget about the Air Force.

Hahah-once you become govt. property, they don't care -you do as they say! The only way to pick a job, is if you score high on the ASVAB!
