We were eating dinner and my husband suddenly zoned out and went red. I had thought he was choking but he didn't come out of it. His left hand and leg were shaking- and then he was fine. This has never happened before. My brother is a flight paramedic and checked him out- but he needs to be seen by a doctor now-NOW. He refused to go until tomorrow. Fine- I'll watch him tonight and take him tomorrow.

This has never, ever happened before...ever.
What can cause this, what are treatments, what what do I do to let him know how very serious this is??? He never goes to the doctor- not unless he is deathly ill. He is 39. He smokes despite my pleas to quit. Otherwise, he seems to be in good health.

I am really, really scared.

That episode could have been a lot of things.

Did your brother say it was a seizure?

What you're describing sounds like what happened when my step mother had a TIA (transient ischemic attack); it's kind of a mild stroke. She snapped out of it with no apparent lasting problems.

I'm not a doctor; I just had some basic education in medical things as part of my degree in Health Information Management and one year of nursing school.

You won't really know for sure what it was until he goes to the doctor and they can run some tests.

Try to take some deep breaths and be strong for him; do your best to make him go to the doctor.

I started having seizures at the age of 12 and stopped at the age of 18. Many different things can cause them, It could be the cause of a head injury, reaction to another illness or fever, a tumor, or just a sudden something will trigger a seizure in the brain. There are grad mal seizures where you drop and start to shake, and there are also psycho motor seizures this is when you zone out and look like you are in a daze. Your husband will have to see a neurologist if it becomes a reoccuring problem and not a reaction to him being ill or sick. They will do tests such as MRI's and EEG's to monitor brain activity and look for any tumors or growths within the brain. Epilepsy is usually controlled with drugs that are taken daily. I have not had a seizure in 8 years so the medicine I take controls them. Some people can feel a seizure coming on they get what they call an aura and know to get to a safe place, As for smoking, my neurologist was always very strict about me not smoking and not driking alcohol because of my medications. The important thing is to let the seizure take its course, if he has a grand mal seizure roll him on his side, put something under his head like a pillow or jacket, and never put anything in his mouth. There is an old myth that you should put a spoon in their mouth, don't listen to that old wives tale it will do even more damage. Yes its scary but wait to hear what the doctor says, it could have been a reaction to something else. I hope that this helps you a bit and I wish you and yor husband the best.
