If so then why were they so against Joseph Smith using the right when he declared that practising polygamy was part of his religion.

Or is it the case the you can only have religious freedom within the lines that the government wants you to.

If read some history you would realise that polgamy was only made illegal because of the LDS Church. when he practised it it wasn't against the law

Religious freedom was one of the major founding principlies of america. and when joseph smith put forth the practice of polygamy it was not illegal, when it WAS made illegal we stopped the practice.. because we believe in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

I had a similar conversation in real life with a Mormon guy. Well, no that wasn't constitutional, but being that men were the sole bread-winners back then, I think the government made a wise move. One man was supporting several different households. Talk about pressure. . .

Polygamy is against the law, that's why. You can't make something party of a religion that is against the law of the land.

If ritual murder was part of your religion, would you expect to be able to murder with impunity? As I understood it, Polygamy was against a state law and had not and has not been struck down by the Supreme Court. Someone please correct me if I am in error on this.

Yes it was. As to Smith et al., we Americans possess a gift for taking hate and prejudice and ignorance to their ultimate conclusions.
