What you need to look at is the first ingredient.
In the grocery store foods usually the first ingredient will be corn or some type of meat by product.
If you go to a Pet store food you will notice the first ingredient is meat; beef, chicken, lamb etc...
Another thing to look at is:
the grocery store foods use alot of fillers - which will make the dogs have to eat more of that food because they're not getting full.
It's like if we snack on junk food all day, you don't get that full feeling and you can just keep eating more and more.
but
the pet store foods are more like those dogs getting a meal, not just junk food. So then the dogs won't have to eat as much as the other foods. You may not notice this for a couple of weeks, until they get used to feeling like they're full, then the amount they eat will decrease.
Another benefit of these pet store foods is because it's a higher quality food they won't be pooping as much. You will notice they will only go 1 to 2 times a day on the pet store foods vs the grocery store foods they probably go about 4 times a day.
And the reason for that is the fillers go right through you which causes you to have to go poop more often.
So Purina, Iams, Pedigree aren't "bad" foods, it's just a difference in what people prefer.
But with these foods they are cheaper in price but you will notice they will go through it faster so how much are you really saving anyhow?
The pet store foods are more expensive but if the dog isn't having to eat as much, it's lasting longer.
But those are the differences. Just compare it to our foods. The healthier foods are more expensive and the junk foods are cheaper, doesn't mean one is worse than the other but it's the benefits that come with them.
I hope I was able to explain that good enough.
If you're feeding your dogs the grocery store foods, those are not bad foods.
It's just that from the pet store foods there are some better benefits ;)
And if you have a larger dog, the foods with the glucosamine in them are better for them.
If you buy a food that does not have glucosamine in it you can always just give them a supplement.
But that will help their joints as they grow and make them stronger.

There are very loose guidelines for making dog food. The commercial foods use everything from wheat, corn, animal by-products (which consists of hoofs, livers, brain, spleen etc...) and even euthanized dogs and cats. Most times they will throw in euthanized dogs and cats with their collars on and cook that! If you're interested in feeding your dog a better diet, try researching the BARF diet. BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods. Or just upgrade to a higher quality dog food. The better the diet is the nicer the coat and skin, the less chance for ear infections, and an overall healthier dog.
I just wanted to add a comment about the person who said you should ask your vet about nutrition... Veterinarians only get an 8 hour course on dog nutrition. This course is sponsored by either Science Diet or Iams. Also the vets get kick backs from these companies for selling their product. So definitely don't ask your vet what to feed your dog! It's not your vet's fault... this is just the education they get. :(

Some dogs are simply "lucky" and perhaps can even thrive on commercial food.
When you go to places where dogs can go off leash, and look for "forgotten" poop, you will notice how much of it simply doesn't look right. Sometimes even the owners don't recognize this.
Some dogs get bloated, have runny stools, can develop allergies and their coats are crappy.
All this is caused by the "commercial dog food".
I feed raw home made food. It takes me perhaps an hour a week to get it ready, and costs less than some of the "premium super extra natural" dog food from a bag.
Good luck, and to others.......please spare me the shitty points. Thank you.

Most commercial foods are full of fillers, corn for example. Dogs can't digest corn. It is also one of the biggest allergen offenders.
The preservatives have been known to cause cancer, these include BHT, BHA, and Ethoxyquin. Some of these foods also contain ingredients used to make anti-freeze.
Meats used in commercial foods come from questionable sources, and can even include euthanized pets.
There are just a few reasons, the list goes on and on. I personally prefer a raw diet for my dogs, and I buy free range organic whenever its available.

Here is why I think they are bad
NUMBER ONE! They have horrble ingredient.. horrible.. those foods have by product... AKA chicken beaks , and things that they wouldn't give us.
NUMBER TWO for the price , you are better off getting Canidae or something.. its bad stuff
Check this website
https://secure.balanceit.com/_client/
and it shows you how to grade dog food.
Also the only reason that Sience diet is at vets offices is because they have a contract , and its not the best food.

Iams is bad because they conduct cruel tests on animals. For example, They cut up the gums of dogs then stitch them back up to replicate gingivitis. This is so they can test out their dog toothpastes.
Visit Iamscruelty.com for more information, plus this article.
Iams Undercover Investigation UPDATE!
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released an official complaint stating that the contract laboratory investigated by PETA in 2002 and 2003, which was employed by pet-food manufacturer Iams, “has shown a lack of good faith.” The government complaint alleges that the following violations, among others, were documented by government inspectors at the contract laboratory from 2002 to 2005:
* Failure to provide pain relief to sheep used in experiments that caused pain or distress
* Failure to ensure that personnel were trained to perform experiments on animals
* Failure to provide veterinary care and to observe animals daily
* Failure to properly ventilate housing facilities for dogs and cats
* Failure to house cats with a sufficient number of litterboxes and resting surfaces
* Failure to keep animal-housing facilities clean and in good repair, resulting in injuries
* Failure to maintain comfortable temperatures in animal-housing facilities
* Failure to provide animals with sufficient space
I know your question was more about ingredients, but I think this is just as important.

How many dogs do you have?? How long have you had dogs ?? Have you tried all the foods out there?? Read up on food at all other than asking questions??
Sorry, if I sound nasty but I am getting a little sick of saying this.. Purina dog foods are COMPLETE garbage.. Iams/Eukanuba, GARBAGE.. The Pedigree, the Beneful, Science Diet, Kibbles N Bits.. and I don't think I have to even mention Ol Roy anymore.. If anyone is still feeding this garbage, they are a lost cause and do not think much of their pets...
I do NOT care who feeds Pedigree and Beneful, Iams Purina etc.. They can feed those foods and pretend or kid themselves that they are good foods.. They obviously are not concerned with proper nutrition in their pets..
Purina and Iams and all these garbage foods are preserved with cancer causing ingredients. BHA/ BHT and Ethoxyquin..
They contain things like colours and dyes that cause cancer. They are full of sugars that cause the pets to become addicted and making it look like they love the food..
They contain things like copper sulfate, which is a fungicide.. They contain Synethetic K, which causes chronic skin and coat problems, birth defects and yeasty ears and a whole bunch of problems.. Chronic diarrhea etc..
They use ingredients that are not human grade, the are ingredients that should be thrown into the garbage not fed to pets.. All these companies are owned by huge companies. IE Proctor and Gamble.. These companies use waste products and by products from their other products and use them as fillers in their dog foods..
Most of these dog foods have been found to contain phenobarbital.. This causes it to be harder for the vet to put your pet under when it comes to surgery and other procedures..
These companies have made dog foods, put them in the grocery store, because they know that people will buy their dog food while getting groceries.. It's sort of a impulse buy.. You're right there, it's easy and you don't have to think about it or make much in the way of decisions.
My dogs are healthy, shiny coats, clear eyes, nice stools, lots of energy, no chronic problems, I rarely go to the vet for anything other than health testing...
I feed good quality food.. The proof is in the pudding.. Good food, healthy dogs, Garbage food, chronic health problems.. If you want to come back and ask how to get rid of your yeasty ears, why is your dog dry, why won't your dog eat, why is he chewing his feet, why does he have gunk in his eyes. why are his anal glands impacted all the time and so on.. Then feed cheap garbage, if you don't want to have those complaints, then feed a good quality kibble..
My dogs are healthy, I really don't even care much what you feed your dog.. If you don't care about your dogs, there is nothing I can do about that. I can try to teach you the truth, can try and get you to understand that dog food is a big profit business. VETS, VET TECHS, and the individual companies, will all lie to you to get you to buy their foods.. I have no agenda.. I am not making money off of dog foods, I get nothing at all for helping you out.. I have no reason at all to lie to you about dog foods.. No one here is making money off of what you feed your dogs.. People with dogs quickly realize when they spend time with their dogs, watch them, interact with them, that the good quality foods make a huge difference in the dogs.. These people that feed garbage and think that their dog is doing well.. Let's see how they feel if they actually spent the money and bought good food.. I'll bet you they would find that they were not as happy with the food as they originally thought.. They are stuck on advertising and think that these companies would not lie to sell their product.. That's a foolish idea to think that a company is being totally honest with you.. They are profiting off of you and they hope you remember their silly little songs when you go to the grocery store.. I can sleep at night feeding good foods.. Feed garbage and you should be filled with guilt and feel horrible about what you are putting into your pet that you supposedly love..
I don't see love, when I see people buying Purina and other crap at the grocery store.. I see uneducated people who are afraid of trying something new, and not really caring much at all for their dog's health..

Not sure who says its bad. Personally I think that Science Diet, IAMS and Eukanbana are the best dog foods that you can feed your dog because they have lots of nutrition. I'm not a fan of pedigree though, because I've heard that it doesn't have the nutrition that dogs need.
I feed my dog Science diet dry food and sometimes their wet food. But if you're worried then ask your vet, not people on the net. Your vet will know exactly what's right for your breed of dog. good luck
