Hardness is a material's resistance to being scratched. Scratching is when atoms are ripped off the surface of the material by the scratching implement.
Strength is the maximum amount of stress a material can withstand before breaking.

Hardness is just a measure of how something resist being scratched by a metal or something harder. Strength is how much force it takes to break something by bending or compression. Things can be hard and brittle and not very strong.
