Why do Americans drive on the right side of the road and most other countries drive on the left? And who was the first first to pick a lane and run with it?

Three quarters of the worlds roads and 2/3 of the worlds countries drive on the right. The only countries I know of that drive on the left are UK and Australia. And most of the other ones are probably also previous UK Colonies.

Traditions mostly. According to this link it goes back to horse drawn carts days. Drive on the left, so you pass with your right hand ready to greet or fight those oncoming. Drive on the right started up where they had larger carts with multi horse teams. You sat on the left of the vehicle so your right hand was able to whip down the center of the column of horses. As you are on the left of the wagon, you drive on the right, so you can still greet or fight those oncoming. Or even just a better view of how much space you have between you and oncoming traffic.
