I have an HD tv and connect my cable directly into the tv without a box. Are all digital broadcasts available? I have added some channels that have digital signals but i am missing most of the big ones (abc, nbc, cbs) any thoughts?

If you subscribe to digital cable, you should be able to get all the "clear" (unscrambled) channels through your TV (including locals).
If you need to get premium channels, you will need a TV with a Cablecard reader and you need to get a cablecard from your cable provider.
Contact your cable provider as to whether you can get local channels without a cable card.

There are probably HD versions of your local broadcast channels on the cable already -- they're just not being passed through the cable box. You can verify this by disconnecting the cable from the box and attaching it directly to the TV. Then run a channel scan on your HDTV and see what channels you get. You may have some "Clear QAM" channels, which will have weird channel numbers like 85-1, etc. It's unlikely the non-broadcast channels will be present in HD. You might be able to hook up a splitter or 2-way video switch to alternate between the box and the Clear QAM channels.

YOU HAVE TO USE A OFF AIR DIGITAL ANTEENA TO PICK UP YOUR LOCAL DIGITAL SIGNAL ONLY. NOT THRU A CABLE WIRE BECAUSE YOUR TV IS SET UP IN THE CABLE MODE TO RECEIVE CABLE CHANNELS ONLY, NOT DIGITAL SIGNAL, SORRY THAT'S HOW THE CABLE COMPANY MAKES THE BIG BUCKS..GOT TO HAVE A DIGITAL BOX
