Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Solid Gold, Innova, and Cannidae.
There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:
A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.
A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.
A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.
A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.
There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

You need to read the ingredient labels. Anything with ground corn listed as the first ingredient is bad. You want to look for ground bone meal, ground chicken, ground lamb, rice...No canned dog food. It is 75% water...not very good nutrition at all. Make sure you stay consistent with the food. Constantly changing it with upset your dogs stomach. No, they don't like variety. It may be our spice of life, but it isn't theirs. : ) Depending on the breed of your dog: if it is a small to medium breed, feed puppy food for 1 year, a large breed, feed it puppy food until it has reached 1 1/2 to 2 years in age. Good luck with your new pup!! : )
Another thing, Merrick makes very good dog food. If you insist on feeding canned dog food, Merrick is the only way to do hit healthfully. Their food is completely natural. It is made with real ingredients and nothing bad. Even humans could eat it, you would just have to add some salt to taste...

I perfer Authority Harvest Baked - can or dry form. This dog food is sold only at PetSmart. Authority Blend is an oven baked recipe for well-being.
Made with real chicken/beef/lamb and wholesome vegetables for a complete balance of nutrition. Authority contains no sprayed on animal fats, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. It contains no white rice or corn, no by products, and no rendered fats.
I have 3 of the most adorable Pom's ever - I switched their dog food a few years ago - my eldest Pom will be 16yrs old this year - he is in excellent health condition, no medical issues and is as active if not more sometimes than the 2 younger ones. He is fed Authority Harvest Baked for less active dogs - the other 2 are fed for more active dogs 1-7yrs old.
Their last vet visit was for a check up only - they all passed with flying colors, everything from teeth, coats to general health. My vet even complimented me on the condition of my eldest Pom Napoleon stating she had never seen a dog his age with a perfect coat and perfect teeth.
I also feed my dogs raw at times purchased from a small local pet store here in town. I also give them raw veggies such as bean and carrots along with fruits like blueberry. Sometimes I mix plain yogart in their food. Chocolate is a NO! never give your dog anytype of chocolate, it can be very harmful to your pet....

We have two Great Pyr's and we feed them Eagle Pack Large Breed Holistic Select (puppy for one)! I also give them Pet Botanics roll (I get it at Pet Smart. They get Mother Nature's Four Way Treat also. Are Great Pyr's the best or what?

I used to think Iams was supposed to be the best but they got in trouble with the tainted Chinese ingredients. For being so expensive, you wouldn't think they were buying the cheapest stuff on the planet to make it. So just go with Purina if you ask me, but I will admit I've bought Ol' Roy at Wal-Mart when looking to save money.

I'd try Evo. It is a grain free dog food. Grains cause all kinds of health issues in dogs.
