Be ready! They love to dig and they are fast! You have to be very careful and keep a close eye on them because anytime that they have a chance to escape, they will take it! You will never be able to let them off leash and fully be confident that they will not run away. They aren't trying to misbehave it is just there nature to follow, well...EVERYTHING!! They are wonderful little dogs though and they make great pets,...except for the barking.=D
Hope that you have a great lifelong relationship ahead of you!

I have had my beagle since he was 9 weeks old. They are great dogs, but you can NEVER let them off leash. They are scent hounds and are scent driven, so if they catch a scent and are not contained in a fenced yard, under your supervision, they could take off and might not return. It is best to crate train them, but you will have a very strong, very loving, very stubborn friend for the rest of its life. I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have if you'd like to email me directly. There is also a wonderful beagle forum on the internet which has been very helpful to me. If you'd like that information, please email me. I'll leave you with this though, I have had dogs all of my life, but my beagle is the BEST dog I have ever been owned by!!

You have gotten the advice to keep a close watch on him because they follow their nose.
I will add that a Beagle is a real chow hound. Watch how much you feed him. He will get fat before you know it.

Buy a book about taking care of puppies and read it.
Then do what it says.
