Because German Sheppards have a very keen sense of smell and are very smart dogs. It makes it easier on the police to train them, and they are put on the force as K-9s

They are also very aggressive, so they use high prejudice with criminals.

German Shepard's are chosen because of their inherent intelligence and "pack mentality". German Shepard's can be trained fairly quickly and easily and can be aggressive. They also work well within a "pack", (most consider the officers they are working with part of their "pack". Some agencies are switching over to Belgian Malinois. The Malinois, even though they are smaller and less intelligent than the Shepards, are highly aggressive and extremely "pack" orientated. Ive heard stories of Malinois breaking teeth off when deployed on a suspect, thus the dog will have titanium implant teeth installed.

They don't. There are several types of dogs that K-9's use. German shepards just happen to be the best at this time.

Police use a variety of dogs. Shepards have a good fetch drive but they also have a good bite. This makes them multi-use. But depending on their use is the type of dog used. Sometimes beagles and mutts are used. Boxers were used in England as police dogs.

As long as the dog has a good fetch drive it could qualify them for use.

Shepard's and Rottweilers where originally used by the Roman army for their aggressiveness, and attack abilities. Those same abilities today police use for there line of work.

GSD were originally bred in the early 1900's in Germany and were widely used in police and military use in Germany because of their intelligence, trainability, fearlessness as well as their sociability.

They were also the first guide dogs for the blind.

I would guess that the police have some sort of valid reason for it. Why not go to a web site about police dogs and see what it says?

German shepherds are highly intelligent, physically powerful, and trainable. Also, they have some of the best noses in the business. This combination of factors makes them a winner.
