I switched my dog to a better quality dog food roughly 4 days ago and I wasn't able to gradually switch her as recommeded because she hated her old food and was actually spitting out the old and only eating the new. Now she has loose stool which I am assuming is from the sudden change. My question is how long will this last? When will her stool firm up and become regular again. Thanks to all in advance

Oh and one more thing. Last Monday she received 1.5 tabs of Drontal Plus. I was picking up poo in the yard and noticed tapeworm in some feces.. Still not exactly sure it was from my dog as the neighbors dog likes to use my yard for his bathroom.... But i gave her the meds to be sure and as per my vet recommended.

Drontal Plus is a broad spectrum vet grade dewormer, and it will induce the passing of tapeworms, amoung other parasites, and they will be visable.

If the loose stools and continual issues persist, you may have something other than a food response going on. I would recommend keeping her on the food you changed her to and requesting your vet examine another stool sample. The vet may prescribe something known as Metroidazole, which will firm up the stool for you, depending on what is determined.

If you changed your dog's diet suddenly you can expect loose stools. It can last up to a week. Next time try a more gradual change, like 1/4 new to 3/4 old and increase new food gradulally until your dog is eating the new diet completely. It's no fun on the dog's part for it to have loose stools either ;)

It's probably not a big deal, but loose stool can cause dehydration, so if it lasts much longer take her to your vet. They can prescribe either medicine or a prescription food (usually w/d is used in this case) that will harden it up in a few days.

I would also suggest you contact your vet about the tape worm. It could be the source of the problem and even if it's not your dog's, it's better to be safe than sorry.

It can take up to 6 weeks sometimes a bit longer for the dogs system to adjust ot a new food especailly if you went from a low quality to a good quality.

There's no hard and fast answer - dogs all respond differently. You can hope she'll be lucky and it'll only last a couple of days. If it gets too bad, Kaopectate is safe to give dogs. Dose is 1/2 ml per pound. But if its only loose, not liquid, why not give it a few days before giving her anything.
