The story of Onan in the OT is used as an injunction against wanking. Onan came on the ground rather than get it on with his dead brother's wife (which is ordered in Lev.,) so this is the scripture that is used to discourage your extracurricular activities.

Despite the fact I don't see a problem with it, given the choice betwen beating off and doing my brother's wife, I'd beat off.

In Genesis, in the Old Testament, there's the story about Onan. It says that God struck him dead because he wouldn't impregnate his sister-in-law after her husband died.

From that some people say that God forbids masturbation, but they're wrong.

God struck Onan down because he deliberatly "pulled out" before he could impregnate his sister-in-law because he didn't want a child with her, even though that was the law at the time.

God struck him dead for breaking the law, not for masturbating.

Another part of that was the people in the OT times didn't know about biology the way we do now. They thought that there were real, itty-bitty babies in a man's semen. They thought that a woman was just a "field" where the little bitty babies would grow -- they didn't know about ovaries and celluar division, etc.

So when a man masturbated and his semen didn't go into a woman, they thought he was killing all those little babies in his semen, who would starve to death outside of a woman's incubation unit. So to them, "spilling seed" was like murder.

Today, we know a little better. Most people know that masturbating won't hurt you, unless you give yourself tennis elbow. :) Lots of doctors even say it's good for you -- that if you masturbate a lot when you're young, you have the tendency to be more sexually active when you're older.

Plus, the bible says lots of things, like you shouldn't eat pork. If somebody says the bible condemns you for masturbating, tell them that the bible condemns THEM for eating bacon.

Saint Paul calls it, "the right hand of fellowship"... (unless you are lefty...) -- Hey a lot of girls in the Bible were into that using dildos, too. They were in the form of idols (Genesis 31:34-35). I'm not kidding. Can you imagine to be one of the 1,000 plus wives and lovers of King Solomon? It would take you about three (3) years to spend a night in bed with your husband... how do you think the ladies got their heat off? Do you know that there is no word of condemnation whatsoever for any lesbian activity in the Old Testament? and so on and so forth... so don't let it bother to you... you won't get blind, either and I am not the devil... you can be sure of that.

You are probably going to get some bad advise from those who could care less about your soul...here is what I think..

I am going to tackle this although I am no bible scholar....I think it is a sin..... This is why? You usually are thinking of some girl or some boy,,or looking at pictures that turn you on....and the bible says if you lust after someone even if just in your heart,,,you are sinning...It would either be fornication, if you are single or adultery if you are married.....think about it!

Not specifically.

Onan was punished for "spilling his seed on the ground" instead of impregnating his brother's childless widow as was required by Mosaic law. This is the basis for the Catholic "sin" of masturbation.

The reason for a man to father a child (a son) with his brother's widow was to keep assets in the family. I childless widow who re-married and had a son would be transferring her first husband's assets to he second husband's family.

I don't remember reading anything about women doing it but it's forbidden to men. I think it goes something like they shouldn't spill themselves out of the womb. Sorry, I'm translating and I don't remember exactly what it says. I read it when I was 15, quite some time ago ;)

Galatians 5:19-21

19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

THIS IS WHAT IT SAYZ!

11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.

James 1:14-15
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

2 Timothy 2:22
22 Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Masturbation is also coveting (lust just being a sexual form of coveting). We don't have to go very far to learn that coveting is wrong, try the 10th Commandment:

Exodus 20:17
17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Genesis 38: 1-10. The passage has been used to discourage masturbation and not completing the act of intercourse hence " spilling his seed".... If you like it, who am I to judge. Advantages: no s.t.d.s and no risk of pregnancy
