what cannot be answered. Instead of having many religions each trying in a different way to answer questions to which we will never know the answers (at least not in this life), why don't we just admit that we don't know. That, incidentally, is the one area where an intelligent atheist and an intelligent Christian could find common ground. Admit you don't know.
(And now will come the answers from people who will insist that they do know. Some people can't even be honest with themselves!)

I guess it's two different definitions of the word "know."

To know by faith, or to know by empirical evidence.

However, sometimes it seems to me that atheists rely just as much on "faith" as religious people. They are so "certain" they are correct, that they can be just as preachy or pushy about it; even though they really don't have empirical evidence that there is no God.

It's impossible to know by empirical evidence whether there is or isn't a God, or whether there is or isn't an afterlife.

The atheist will say that since God's existence cannot be proven by empirical evidence, that means God does not exist. A religious person might say the God's existence is something above and beyond empirical evidence. This debate will go on and on forever with no real conclusion--each side saying "I won."

When I was a younger person, I chose agnosticism, now I choose religion. However, I am not a Christian and I am not literal minded. I prefer religion because I see myself as a better person with it than without it. If it turns out that there is no afterlife, etc., and my religion is only an idea; I am okay with that.

Whatever someone's religion may be, I am more concerned with the depth and ethical system it offers than I am concerned whether such and such a story really happened or not.

The God that created all things is far to dimensional that no one person, religion could ever truly understand. There are many things that God does not want us to understand other that treating others as we would treat ourselves. Most of us have had experiences with God or our higher power that helps us to better understand situations that we have gone thru, however that does not make it the rule, God works in so many mysterious ways, we would be idiots to believe that we could truly, fully understand how He works and all that He has created operates. We should respect others opinions and beliefs. We can share our personal experiences in hope that it would give the unbeliever a testiment that there is more then meets the eye, so that they too may watch for the signs and miracles that we have experienced for ourselves. There is alot we can learn from each other. We have the freedom to pick and chose what we can concieve as being the truth until more has been revealed. We need to keep an open heart, mind, and trust that the God of our understanding will continue to show us more as we spiritually evolve.

People are religious because they are taught to believe in god. If religion was wiped off the earth like it had never existed and science stayed, we'd all believe in the scientific theories. It's just the way you're taught. The reason why people are religious is because there were no major scientific discoveries in the ancient times. They figured everything that was made was created by some sort of supernatural being. But they were indeed wrong. The reason religion is invalid is because there are so many different kinds. Most Americans are Christian, most middle easterners are Muslim, most Asians have different asian religions.

No one really knows, and everyone knows that, they just dont want to admit it and everyone has there own little idea of what it will be like in the after life if they even believe in one. I personally like to think it will be what ever I want it to be which is pretty simple yet fairly complicated , skating and someone to love and be with, 2 thing i already do the other is just a dream or a hope but you can never lose sight of your dreams. The day i do is the day i die,

You really shouldnt care what other people say think or do, it is there own ignorance that leads them to be like that so just dont worry about it just know that you dont want to be like that, all you can control is your self and what you believe and the best thing you can do is keep it that way

Lets hope in the near future there is an ANSI or ISO standard for religion because all religions preach the same message -
God, Love, Peace, Good Deeds, Charity - it is interpreted by different people and groups for their own good.

You have to see around you to realize the bigoted interpretations which finally urge extremism and non acceptance of others.

Once religion is recognized as a "best practice" it will not be long before there is an international standard published and that will be the day. Peace and harmony ??

Big brother will proclaim him / her self to be God !

Well my friend i am honest with myself. Of course I don't know everything, but what I do know is there is a God who does know everything.
And you calling religion just "one effort to answer what cannot be answered" isn't very good in helping intelligent atheists and intelligent Christians find common ground.

by using fact there's a distinction between asserting "the international seems flat" and "the international is a plate suspended on the decrease back of a huge turtle." one is an remark of the senses. the different is a bounce to conclusions based off the remark of the senses. by potential of utilising the remark "the international seems flat", you upload a touch geometry and craftsmanship, and you are able to construct a development. by potential of utilising the conclusions "the international is a plate suspended on the decrease back of a turtle" you are able to spur your fellow tribesmen directly to conflict, to hate and kill the different tribe who thinks that the international is a plate suspended on the decrease back of an elephant. Your senses can continuously functionality coaching, whether it delivers an answer which you do no longer desire to pay attention. faith can under no circumstances be. it quite is a myth, a drug that folk take to supply their convictions, even nevertheless fake, legitimacy. in simple terms as astronomy has positioned to chill out the stupid concept that the Earth is a flat plate; better information of physics will sooner or later positioned to chill out the stupid concept that some magical sky daddy snapped his palms and poofed the Earth into existence. and that i know what you're thinking "however the international isn't flat! it quite is around!" I used that occasion on purpose, by using fact human beings like to quote it as info that the senses won't be able to be depended on. yet there's no longer something fake related to the fact "the international seems flat." asserting "the international seems to be flat" is logically actual, considering the fact that out of your vantage factor, interestingly flat. If I have been to declare "the international is a sphere so super that the curvature of the Earth is negligible on a human scale", it particularly is a real fact, extra true than asserting "the international is a plate on a turtle" and not contradictory to the word "the international seems flat to me". The senses under no circumstances lied to us whilst it instructed us the international replaced into flat. the story-teller who weaved thoughts of the super, cosmic turtle did. awareness can exist, by using fact the senses would be depended on. faith won't be able to be depended on. believe your senses, yet know that there is often a threat that your conclusions may well be incorrect. A scientist is conscious this. a guy or woman of religion refuses to take action.

I'm with you on this one. Although I don't begrudge anybody their faith, it really frustrates me all the suffering caused in our world because of peoples misguided (and often bizarre) beliefs.
Faith is just that, a belief.
I thoroughly mistrust organized religion because as soon as you begin to tell people what to believe and what to think, it becomes a means of control without any legitimate cause.

Does not knowing have to mean that you have to believe in some made up fiction to appease your lack of knowledge? There are things that I do not know, but religion has not answered any of these, whereas science has made a lot more sense.
