Standard deduction for 2007 - $5,350
Additional amount if blind - $1,050
Additional amount if over 65 - $1,050
Personal exemption for 2007 - $3,400

So, you can make $8,750 if not legally blind or under 65
You can make $9,800 if either legally blind or 65 or older
You can make $10,850 if both legally blind and 65 or older

This is what you can make in 2007 before having to pay federal income taxes.

In 2006 it was $8450 for federal - it's a couple hundred dollars higher this year, I'm not sure of the exact amount.

If you have any dependents, or itemized deductions more than your standard deduction, or adjustments to income, you might be able to make more and still not owe any tax. But it sounds like you are way beyond where you'd escape taxes.

The limit would be $8,750 assuming that they are not over 65 Years old or blind as for Federal Income tax. Each state that has income tax has it's own limit which is frequently lower.

I think it also might have to do with what state you live in.
