I am in Georgia. My husband is 8 hours AHEAD of me (Eastern Time Zone).
A good idea might be what I did for our family the day after my husband left. I brought 2 cheap clocks from the dollar store. I set one to our time say 1 pm and then the other clock I set to Iraq time 9 pm. I put them one above the other in our computer room/family room. I put labels underneath each of them, one saying Fort Stewart and the other Saying Ramadi (where he is deployed to in Iraq). Now my girls can see what time it is where their dad is. This helps them a little bit when he is not here.
When you say south, what state do you mean?
This might help you:

Also thought of these yahoo groups, you might like to check out. It is ladies who have sons or daughters deployed, a couple are marine moms and are couple are all military branches:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USMC_MOM/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/soldiermoms/
even though this group says soldier moms, they accept all moms from all services. They are extremely nice and lovely bunch of ladies.

Good luck and I hope you are doing well. Know that you and your family and your son are in my prayers as are all military members.

If it is 1900 here I am ex-military and have been in the middle East,it is between 1500 and 1600,there Greenwich Mean Time and it is still the same day except they are seven to eight hours ahead of us so when we get up in the morning here half there day time is already gone and I understand my son is Ex-Marine on duty at Camp Pendleton, the day 9/11 happened so trust me I no how you feel.

Iraq is 8 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone in the USA, so at 7PM, it will be 3AM the next day,
ie, if it is 7PM Sunday night here, it will be 3AM
Monday morning in Iraq. Hope this helps!!

My husband is out in the Gulf right now. They are 10 hours ahead of California, so depending on whether you're in the central or eastern time zone just go from there.
I wish your son luck and the best to you and the rest of your family.

Originally, I wanted to give a snarky reply. Now that I read the whole question that is summarily out of the question.
There is a plus eight hour difference between est and Baghdad time. God bless and keep your son safe, as he bravely defends us here at home.

If you have an iPod Nano, it should be on there. Also, try searching on Google. You'll get fast results and correct results. Here on yahoo answers, everyone will just type their opinions and guesses.
