What type of addition are we talking about? Additions are a life long decision/habit. They key to kicking the addition is to one, not do it. Two when the urge hits, find something else to do to get your mind off of it. As time goes on it will get easier. Three...if your friends are into, whatever it is that you are trying to kick...lose the those friends and find others who are into clean, healthy fun.
Do not go back. If you are into something addictive and you quit, the first time is the easiest. Once you go back after quitting, it's not so easy. The addition can get worse.
Find a support group. Family, friends...AA something. Take up a new Hobie.
Sorry, this is the best advise being that your question doesn't give much information.

To break yourself of an addiction it takes a serious amount of faith, self love, self discipline, and a strong support group. Whatever your addiction is, how big or small, you need to consistently not give in to it for 90 days to really see a difference in your mind. You have to want to change to see results. Go out with friends, find a great and fun hobby, work out, whatever it takes not to think about it. If it's really serious, please seek treatment through counseling or rehab.

Try playing Halo for several weeks straight without a break...that may cure what you're addicted to unless it is video games....gotta get your mind off what ever it is for a while till your body cleans itself out (chemical addiction). Then find something healthy to get addicted to.

It depends on the addiction. If you are talking a bilogical addiction based on a chemical dependency (Eg: such as drugs, alcohol), the best way is a combination of behaviour modification (or therapy) and in some cases appropriate medication.
(I have a background in psychology)

12 step programs are the most successful method ever invented. it's very very hard. most people can't do it on their own. usually at first inpatient is best (where you are in a hospital or facility that you can't leave). then support programs as you go back to regular life. you have to make new friends and lots of changes. you need a good support program. making up your mind alone won't usually work.
