Sometimes local shelters are more than $100. Try Best Friends Rescue in your local area or the Animal Welfare League. Many of their dogs have lived with foster families, who can give you an idea of the dog's habits.
A dog will cost up to $100 a month, and needs annual shots - mine just cost $170.
I would look for a cross-breed, or a miniature poodle or a corgi. Terriers tend to yap a lot. Think about whether you want a dog with long hair, which needs to be groomed and will drop hair or a smooth coat which is easier to manage. If you decide on a purebreed, go on the web and look at what it was bred for - is it a lap dog, a working dog which will need exercise but is more trainable, a hunting dog which is more independent, a guard dog which will need to be trained.
Too many dogs end up at the animal shelter because their owners didn't do the homework. Remember you don't buy a puppy, you buy a friend who will rely on you for the 10 years or more of its life.
Best of luck with your new companion!

Go to your local shelter. The dogs are usually inexpencive. Just remember that dogs are a 15 year comitment usually. Plan for about $50-$100 per month for food and vet bills

Go to your local animal shelter. You can get a dog for $40 or less. They ask you if you rent and they will call your landlord to make sure it is okay to have a dog. Pure breed dogs are going to cost you between $200-$1000+.

check your local shelters and rescues. all my animals are rescues and wonderful members of my family. however remember that on top of the price to purchase or adopt a dog there are vet bills, vaccinations, food, toys, training, and numerous other expenses, that sometimes are unplanned(emergencies,etc..) make sure you are well prepared to purchase a top quality food, and provide excellent vet care, among all the other things ive already listed at any expense to provide your new family member with a safe and healthy life.

Why buy a dog when you can get one at the shelter for practically nothing?

Remember that dogs are much more expensive than the purchase price. Plan on $100 - $200 per month!

Yes, I would say check out your closest animal shelter. Alot of the times that have cool pooches in there. I got my favorite pet I ever had from an animal shelter.

You have already gotten many great places to check out and I would also recommend them first. If you have tried them and haven't found anything, then you might want to try out
freecycle.org and see if there is one there that needs a good home near you. I find that there is often animals in my area that people are having to find homes for, for one reason or another.
