Every cat or kitten needs a diet that is around 60% quality meat protein. The 2-4% more protein that is put in "kitten" food is insignificant. Plus with the less expensive foods you don't know where that protein is coming from as we have so recently learned! Corn is protein and it is still not appropriate cat or kitten food.

So if you are feeding your cat foods such as Eagle Pack, Natural Balance, Innova, Solid Gold, CA Natural or Felidae the kitten is getting the same amount of protein as in "kitten" food.

After all a mother cat does not bring her kittens special "kitten" mice when she weans them so don't be fooled by manufacturers' promotions of ANY special cat diet.

it is okay, but they are not getting the right amount of protein. When we got our kitten they did the same thing, even though our other cat was already overweight, we switched her food to kitten food for a while, that way the kitten got enough nutrients. We also for a while just gave the kitten wet kitten food, because they usually like to eat it as soon as you brought it out, so you knew that the older cat wouldn't even get a chance to eat it

Kitten chow has more of the ingredients for healthy kitten growth, but specific food for kittens hasn't been around that long so I'd say that adult cat food isn't going to hurt your kitten. I've avoided that problem by adopting cats that are at least two years old - they're more difficult to place than kittens and, so far, it's worked out quite well.

It should be fine but kittens need certain nutrients that adult cat foods don't have in them. Start having certain times to feed them, once in the morning and once in the night. Try putting the kitten in a different room until they are done eating. You won't need to do this long but it is a lot easier than trying to train the kitten.
Hope that this helps!=D

i've had this same issue(as i'm sure have most people who've ever been multiple cat owners)many times when i was in a position to shelter various cats. i think it is a problem because a kitten needs a much richer diet than an adult. they are kids after all.so you may find that your kitten isn't getting the specific nutrients he/she needs right now.
the opposite is also problematic.an adult cat sneaking the kits food can gain weight dramatically and possibly become a big diabetic beastie that eats your supper guests.

If the kitten has no difficulty swallowing it, and seems to be digesting it okay then I wouldn't worry. If you are concerned about nutrients you could try otc vitamins for cats or mix kitten chow with the rest of the food.

I had this same problem, so I asked the vet. His response was.....it won't kill the kitten, but it won't get the nourishment that it needs to grow and thrive. A kitten needs food especially formulated for kittens for at least ONE YEAR. I had to separate my feeders so that I could monitor my kitten's eating. My older cats weren't too happy about that, but they got used to it. Good luck w/your "baby".

No its not good for them. Give your kitten food that is for kittens and give it Purina kitten food until the kitten is 1 year old and then thats when you can give adult cat food to your kitten. Purina cat chow Mentor emailed me about the right age. They told me to give kitten food to kittens until the age of 1 year and then you can change it over slowly so they will not get sick. I did that with my cat when she was a kitten and when she was 1 year of age I gave her adult cat food.
