I am 15 years old and have had trouble with depression and have been in trouble with the law, I understand that this is the time to figure out what you want to be when you grow up. I have decided between two professions; A psychiatrist, to help out kids that suffer from depression, or a cop to help the community and to help kids not be drug users and make mistakes like I have. I need help in deciding, thanks all.

I would probably say that you would more likely enjoy being a psychologist or counselor if you really want to help people with their problems..a psychiatrist sees people who have mental disorders and prescribes medication, etc. but does not really do as much counseling as a psychologist. I think if you want to be able to help keep kids from making mistakes maybe you could do whatever job attracts you the most and then do some volunteer work on the side, like be a mentor or work at the Boys and Girls Club. You are young and still have a long time to decide what you want to be!! You will probably change your mind many times:)

Ok. Good question. Let's look at what you must do to become one or the other.

Firtst,. finish HS and get good grades.
To become a cop, here.s the necessary education,

Assoc degree in criminal justice, 2 years at a community college. Then several weeks in a police academy.

to become a psychiatrist..

4 years college, pre med at most 4 year colleges,
then 4 years of Medical school,
Then 3 years internship and residentcy

Effective right now, no more trouble with the police, and if you feel you are suffering from depression, get some help. Promise??

Either way you go, you will be a BIG help. Good luck.

Oh, FYI,you might want to pay a visit to your local police dept and talk to a policeman, and see exactly what a police man does. i suggest you call first.

Both those professions are noble and service to others. Good for you. One has at least ten more years of education than the other however. But if you really apply yourself in school now focusing on that goal, it will be much more rewarding than whatever you had a problem with. You will have a great sense of accomplishment. YOU CAN DO IT

As time goes by, you'll learn what you really want to do for a living. when I was your age, I wanted to be a cop but things changed & I grew out of that.

I think you should be a phsychiatrist. you'll have a longer lasting effect on people that need you and you can help people with all sorts of problems. (and, not that it matters, but you'll get paid more!!) :)
