When I have always went and got my puppies, i had a few names in mind, and when we saw her/him, you knew which name fit them. Never did I have a couple days without a name for my dog.. Thats me though.. I just see it soo much...

Dobiegang, Im glad you found a way to send people to find names.. I just get curious to why people would want someone else to name their dogs, and its Soooo much..

Hi goldengal :)thanks for answering.

as for the gal under you, You don't read up on the breed your looking to purchase before you buy it? You just go get whatever is on sale? I mean MOST people have an idea on what kind of dog they are getting before getting it.. How do you purchase a dog without knowledge of the breed? i guess you would be one of the people on here asking for dogs names too..

Anca, i wasn't singling you as the only person, you get on her day after day and you see what should i name my dog? like posted 5 times.. (in like an hour) Maybe you were one who gave specifications on to what your dog looked like, its just hard for others to name your dog not knowing personality and so on.. Why is the breeder individually registering your puppies for you? Why aren't u? Just curious

OH, How I agree. I would never want anyone else naming my dogs, but myself. This is why when I answer these questions I provide a site, that lists thousands of names, where they can choose a name for their own dogs. Believe it or not, I have had best answer many times by providing this site & not actually giving a name!!

Well, I asked for suggestions because:
* we haven't brought them home yet and are working with a deadline to pick names
* needed to come up with names that we both (my husband and I) agreed upon
* had already tried dozens of dog/baby/etc. name websites for possibilities
* and, finally, was getting pretty desperate.

And, given that we are getting a pair (male and female litter mates) and I described their breed and colouring and outlined the criteria for the choices, I had hoped for some creative ideas.

Lesson learned.

ETA: I think it's an unfair generalisation to say that asking about names means you haven't put much thought into the important things. And, for the record, I found it a *lot* easier to pick out (human) baby names than dog names.

ETA2: When you are bringing home puppies, it is not always possible to get a feel for their unique personalities. If you are bringing home two dogs at once, it is particularly important to start training them with their individual names as soon as possible. Finally, as the breeder will be submitting the registration papers for individual puppies, it would be helpful if we gave her our decision at the time we picked them up. (She need not register them under the names we picked, but it would be nice.)

ETA3: "Why is the breeder individually registering your puppies for you? Why aren't u? Just curious" That's the way it's done (legally required) where the breeder lives. I understand it's different in the U.S.

Um, yeah, it's a bit weird. But I can understand not thinking up a name before you get him home. You want the name to fit the dog.

Once, when I was a kid, there was this dog that showed up at my front door... and wouldn't leave. My dad used to walk to the bus station. The little dog followed him to the bus (like 1/2 mile or something) and then ran back home. My parents wouldn't let him in but he hung out on the front porch. I named him Bob (from What About Bob). It was such a perfect name. Well, we found some friends who would take him, so then he got to come in the house till they could claim him. But what really annoyed me was that they had named him Charlie before they ever saw him... before they ever even saw a picture of him. I've never forgotten that lol. 'Bob' was such a perfect name!

I do admit I like giving name suggestions occasionally. I'd never ask for it though. It's too fun to name your own dog!

You are so right! I won't even look at any of those questions! When I plan (and sometimes a new one isn't planned) to get a puppy, I look at it before I agree to purchase it, and I have usually 2 to 4 weeks before I can even pick it up to decide on a name. I guess a lot of people in here just see a puppy and want it, no thought, no research, no brains!

I am not clever at coming up with names. I like to get a lot of ideas from different people and then go from there. My Step-dad was great at picking names for all kinds of animals. He had a little female Chihuahua named, "Lady Dyna Mite". When we got a male he named him, Sir Prance a lot, which he did. I don't know how they come up with such clever names. My Sister did an experiment with cats for a college project. She advertised for pregnant cats and got 3 of them. After the kittens were 10 days old she left one with each mother, left some grouped together without their mother, and left some alone. What she was looking for is how it would affect their learning and they would have to figure out a maze. One of the kittens became so stressed about being alone that it cried too much and it's hair fell out. They kept her until she passed at age 20. Her name was, you guessed it, Hair Bare. She had a great personality and was a lot of fun. My did I get off the subject..Mmm

I have a good time naming my dogs.. I wouldn't want someone else to take that away from me.. It's like your own little personalization.
I believe tho too that a dog responds better when they like their name.. So you have to pick the perfect name for that dog..
I get bent out of shape if someone spells my dog's name wrong, or correct them if they mispronounce the name.. A name is very important I believe. It belongs to them, and identifies them from the others, makes them just a little bit more special.
" Hey, she's talking to ME "

I picked out my names before I went and got a dog. The coolest dog I ever met was named Gator. He was a state police german shepherd who was awesome. We lived in Florida at the time and I thought that was the neatest name. I also thought of lots of names before I ever actually picked out my dog. I wanted to name him Gator, Nitro, Maximus, something strong and big and cool. Needless to say, I picked out my dog from the pound, his name was Lucky, and none of hte other names remotely fit his happy go lucky personality. So he kept his name.

I just think that it is funny that people want us to name their dog when 1.) we don't know what the dog looks like and 2.) we don't know what the dog acts like.

I mean, name your dog based on what you like and what his/her personality is. And when people respond with 900 names, it is annoying!

I think some people are just so excited about getting a new pet that they forget their pet's basic needs like a ready made environment that is suitable for the newbie. Then they get so stressed whether or not everything is perfect they need help and ask a friend.

Sometimes it's hard to pick a name. But I prefer it when people tell you about the dog, provide a picture or give a few choices to pick from, instead of telling you nothing at all.
