Because they have no wife to beat them. Actually, you are right, it is not Biblical.

Because it makes for a good movie scene!
In the days when hermits and monks were religious superstars, some ascetics wore shirts of scratchy material, or sharp metal bracelets, or they whipped themselves, all to show contempt for fleshly comfort. They attempted to eliminate the allure of worldly desire so that they could better focus on the spirtual realm. It was all part of a mindset that saw the world and the "flesh" as evil and the spirit as good. The practices weren't literally biblical, but the attitude certainly was, straight out of the letters of Paul.
Such practices may still be indulged in individual, isolated cases, but there is no church authority that encourages it these days.

Its obvious to anyone with half a brain that because they are fryers,they must first tenderize their skin. And it is Biblical, 'cause its in the old Martha of Bethany Cookbook. Just like her descendent Martha Stewart, Martha of Bethany was a busy little multi-tasker. Of course some of the friars beat themselves because they're into S and M. But that's a subject for another day.

"I chastise my body and bring it into subjection: lest perhaps when I have preached to others I myself should be castaway" (I Cor. 9:27);
"In my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, that is the Church." (Col 1:24)
We chastise our bodies (this is also known as mortification) to bring it under the subjection of our higher selves (viz. our intellect, and our spirit). In doing so, we detach ourselves from the desires of the flesh, and bring ourselves better under submission to Christ.
The Discipline (a rope whip) is not used to break the skin, but only to cause mild discomfort. Likewise, the cilice belt (a metal belt with inward pointing smoothed-over barbs) are not used to break the skin--or even leave much of a mark. Using one for an hour helps detach ourselves from a desire for personal comfort, allowing us to pay more attention to prayer, and the love of God and of our neighbour.

Eating mashed potatoes and gravy is not biblical either.
Whipping is supposed to remind them of the whipping that jesus had to endure.

They think they are "doing penance" for their sins, rather than just accepting the free gift of salvation that Jesus already paid for them on the cross.

lots of people do strange things in the name of Christ. I think this is one of those trying to get closer to God by feeling what Jesus felt when He was on the cross. This is not a Christian attitude. You do not get closer to Jesus or God by doing these things to harm yourself.

its actualy only a small sect of roman catholics that do it out of some strange idea of retribution for thers sins. they beleive that the physical pain helps to clense them of sins. they also do it in order to be closer to jesus who was flogged by the romans, they feel that the experince helps them to understand his sacrifice better. personaly i think they are loons.
