Well for one thing a shotgun is not a rifle. If you have never owned a gun you should get with someone that knows how to handle a weapon and show you the safe operation of a shotgun.

Ballistics for Dummies is a good starter book. I enjoyed it. Shoot it frequently, clean it after every time you use it. Store it in a case. Never use ammo that is more than 4 years old. Keep the trigger locked. Rifles are great.

Keep the gun in a dry place, well oiled and cased.

Never ever leave or store your gun in a gun case*... Use the gun case to transport the gun, but never leave it stored in a gun case because it will rust*....

simple, keep it clean and oiled. don't abuse it- shoot it only on special outings and it may outlive you. ALWAYS SHOOT SAFELY. IF YOU'VE NEVER OWNED A GUN, GET SOME SAFETY INFO.
