I was just in a car accident. The car in front of me stopped at a poorly placed cross walk, so I stopped too, but the SUV behind me didnt....he smashed right into the back of my car. My car only sustained relatively minor damage to the trunk...it will probably cost around $1500 to fix I would think. He didnt want to go through insurance, so against my better judgment just got all of his insurance info, license plate, address, and phone number. We didnt call the cops. No pictures. etc. Am I going to be sorry about this? what should I do? Is there anything I can do to protect myself if this guy turns out to be a jerk who doesnt pay up?

I don't see anything wrong with what you did at all. As long as you have all of his insurance information that's whats most important. If he does happen to come out as a jerk you do have his information to further deal with the problem.

In many areas, you can go to the police station and file a report after an accident. It would be in your best interest if you did this. You didn't say how he planned on covering the damage to your car. Your estimate of damage cost may (and probably will be) much lower than the actual cost of repair. You could call him and ask how and when he plans to pay. His attitude and "payment schedule" should be evidence of his intentions.

You are going to be soooooo sorry.....
The best thing you can do is go ahead and report this to your insurance TONIGHT. They will handle recovering the money from him and will return your collision deductible. Unless, of course, he's LYING and driving a stolen car.
Like I said, you will be sorry you didn't call the cops.
Footnote: why wouldn't he want to claim this on his insurance? Do you actually believe that his rates will increase MORE than the repair cost on your car?? Bad, bad decision...

in my area a cop wont even respond unless the damage exceeds 2500 or the car is undrivable. What you did wasnt smart, but it wasnt the end of the worlds either. worse case scenario, your own policy has to cover it and you are out your deductible.
