I'm not criticizing Christians , but I'm simply curious.

No proof. Before god there was worship of the elements, nature, the sun, etc. These beliefs coalesced into Greek (and later Roman) Pantheism, and finally into monotheism (Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah, Buddha, etc.)

Most cultures worshiped nature and the sun in one form or another. It makes sense, actually, since life itself really does come from the sun and the earth.

Religion has been around in various forms for many thousands of years and has evolved just as our civilization has evolved. Nature/element worship was superseded by polytheism (many gods) and later monotheism (one god). Many so-called Christian ideas were actually "borrowed" from earlier teachings and then attributed to Jesus. The most successful religions seem to have been the ones that either didn't require any "proof" at all or can claim that lots of things prove the existence of their god(s). The later is a slippery slope indeed, which is why Christianity picked the "no proof/faith only" approach (a good marketing strategy on their part as something requiring no proof is difficult to disprove).

Within the last few centuries, as science rapidly progressed and more people became better educated, our need for superstitious beliefs has steadily declined, resulting in the rise of Deism (which rejects "revealed religion") and finally agnosticism and atheism.

Just as monotheism gradually replaced polytheism as the predominant belief system, atheism appears to be gradually replacing monotheism. Humans are still evolving, still "growing up" . . .

No offense taken, and I do not see your question as criticism.

Most often the road to the truth leads along the path of being a doubting Thomas, and it is natural for people who are looking for answers to want "proof".
What is "proof", in science it is often refers to an experiment, or theory that can be replicated with the same results; I am sure that is not going to be possible with the formation of the earth, so we Christians rely on the truth of God, and faith.

Genesis 1: 1, 2
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form, and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep.

To me I see daily proof, just by looking at all the wonders of nature, new life, and the universe.

There was nothing before God, God has always been, He is the Alpha, and the Omega.
There is one God and Father of all. Ephesians 4: 6

And one God and one Father, who is over all and in all and living through all.
He existed before anything else and holds all of creation together.
John 1: 1-3 and Colossians 1:16-17.

Because you have LIFE should be proof enough. You did not give yourself LIFE. Not even your parents gave you LIFE. Every time they did the nasty they didn't have a child. There is a mystery that cannot be figured out but CAN be experienced in it's fullness.

The universe and my boyfriend and last night's sunset and newborn babies is proof enough for me.

There was no beginning to God. He was, He is, and He will always be.

there is no proof that is accepted by every well-thinking person, and no proof that accepted by science.
