It's being a dominant dog. Does Grandma think it's cute or does she correct him? It isn't cute. The dog is not protecting her. He is "owning" her and telling you this is his toy, his mate, his territory. It is a dominance and aggression issue. If it is a big dog, it is extremely dangerous, but even in a small dog it needs to be corrected. It's not cute.

It could be one of two things:

1) The dog sees your grandma as the alpha in the household and is trying to secure his/her order in the family so it's actually due to jealousy of you getting a higher status.
2) The dog believes you are trying to hurt your grandma and is protecting her as you say because he/she feels it is his/her duty.

I would definetly go with the first choice since it is common for tiny dogs.

There's been alot of evidence that animals can detect and act out a person who is terninally ill.

One of my best friends (30) was pregnant with ehr first child and her dog strated biting people that came near her. And he would gnaw on a place on her back. She eventually went to the doctor and he found advanced lymphoma which had to be operated on right away (8 months pregnant). She and her children are fine for now.

The dog knows that your grandmother is elderly and probably very fraile. The dog is instinctively protecting her because he/she knows your grandma is helpless. He's not doing out of meanness, but just being the good, protective watchdog that he is.

Your Grandma is probably the dogs "Master" they are very protective then. You could kiss your Grandma good bye after you earn the Dogs trust.

Protecting her. However, the dog should not be allowed to do this. It is aggressive behavior.
