I have been a fishing guide for 3 years now in the Pacific Northwest. I charter on the average of 3 times per week. I learned to fish with my family in Louisiana for over 30 years. Experience is my answer to your question. I started as a deckhand on a shrimp boat. I learned from allot of old school captains. I would have never dreamed that I would be my own boss and chartering 30 years ago. I still use everything I learned from countless experienced fisherman today. And very lucky to say that I have fished all around our world collecting tips and hints from the locals I would fish with.

Ya there are many Jobs at sea. If you dont want to be a fisherman like the guys in Deadliest Catch, you will need to probably go to a resort place and establish good connections with the marina at the resort. Then if a big boat comes by and need help you can be their deck hand and clean the boat and take care of it. If you want to be a pilot boat captain you need to go take a captians course and get an 8-pack lisencse allowing you to captian the largest boats out there. Make sure to talk to the best marina where ever you are because they can also help. You may also want to try the coast guard.

There are jobs on the northeast coast. Best places are Gloucester, Massachusetts, Port Judith, Rhode Island, Montauk, New York, Pleasantville, New Jersey, and Cape Haterias, North Carolina. Outside of that there's work in Alaska. Then you have Louisana. All of these jobs are working on trawlers. You go out for several days. Usually, unless you have connections, you are going to need experience. It's not easy handing all of the nets, ropes, and fish.
