If you were at a formal dinner then yes it would be rude, but its family and you were being practical. Families shouldnt be so formal with each other but relaxed so my answer is no its not rude, just practical.

I would have asked to be permitted to put what I wanted on my plate in the first place. Perhaps if you know that she is a little controlling about serving dinner you could have told her when you first sat down that you are trying to watch your diet and would prefer to serve yourself. I would not, however, have done as you did and dumped the food to an empty plate. Instead, I think I would have simply eaten what I felt I wanted to eat and left the rest on the plate. Then if she made a comment, I would have apologized and said I'm just too full to eat another bite. Perhaps that would cure her for next time and she would let me serve the portion I wanted for myself. The most important thing here is not to turn your mother-in-law's peculiar little serving habit into a big drama, so don't make this bigger than it is. I feel like even though it was kind of foolish for her to do what she did, it was rude of you to do what you did in response. I think you probably caused a minor 'scene' as you plunked the food onto another plate the way you did. Simply eating with everyone else and stopping when you were through would have been a better choice.

First things first, why is she serving u dinner? and yes i do think that dumping your unwanted food onto an empty plate is rude. Just be nice, always respect your elders, suggest saying something like, "wow, looks great mom, i sure hope I can eat it all." After all, old habits die hard, and i know she means well, but dont make a mountain outta of a mole hill.

Yeah it was rude to put it onto another plate. She should have said something as you were serving or ate what she could and said she was full and couldn't finish it. Then polity thanked the mom for diner. I lived with my mother-in-law and I ate everything on my plate even if I didn't like it. SOme people are brought up differently with different morals. So what's rude in one family might not be another.

If she serves you eat only want you want, or like you asked ask for a empty plate, or ask her to put a very small amount of everything on your plate.

Why is she putting food on your plate? Shouldn't you be getting your own food? Yes, it would be a bit rude to do that, but you could always say "It looks fantastic, Mom, but I really can't eat all of that! Just half of it would be plenty. I can always get more if I still feel hungry afterwards." And keep a BIG smile on your face at all times!

I would say it is a little rude...If it were me I would try to ask for less food - or if she insists on serving me a lot - I would only eat what I wanted and leave the rest.

Well, it depends if she's done this before. If she has- you should have just told her you would get your own food- your not a child!! But if she has'nt- you should of just told her it was too much and put the amount you didn't want back or just not ate it all and when she asks why you didnt finish it, just tell her it was way too much!!

Awkward to say the least. You should have spoken up before being served, saying you are following a strict diet to maintain your health and that you need to serve yourself.
