At his second inaugural address, Abraham Lincoln quoted what is today the motto of the VA, "To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan."

I think Lincoln would be ashamed of the way our veterans are treated.

Sean G, do you know WHY the spending is so high? It's because of the war. They HAVE to be spending so much to take care of all the wounded Iraq vets.

Interesting, the VA as Originally established cared for those with SERVICE-CONNECTED injuries/diabilities. Today you can demand the taxpayer foot Viagra for erectile dysfunction not service related.

VA Healthcare spending under the Current Admin is the HIGHEST it has EVER been.

So, I'd say Lincoln would be amazed at how well Veterans are taken care of vs. the level of 1865 Genius

Even with his disability; the late President Abraham Lincoln must be turning over in his grave. At least the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson has resigned and is leaving with much more respect from the government than many other veterans have ever received. It is humiliating to be forced to beg and grovel for proper medical care that consists of more than a bunch of pharmaceuticals. I’ll be happy when President Bush announces that the VA budget is no longer 1.15% of the federal budget, but the 3.5 percent it should be.

"...who shall have borne the battle..". Couldn't agree more. But, if you look around the VA health care system it's clogged up with a lot of folks who spent two years folding blankets at Fort Dix and want to suck the system dry for their "benefits". We're at war. It's time to clear out all of the non-service connected clients out of their system to free up resources for those who have "borne the battle".

Judging by his attitude to the colored people of America in his day (He had slaves in service).
He probably would not care one bit.
