Because the term "expeditionary" indicates an ability to project power ashore by other means than the use of amphibious landing craft. Vertical envelopment, via helicopter assaults, has been cemented in doctrine in order to enable the Marines to get into the objective area more quickly and with a little more stealth, causing opposing forces ashore to wonder where in the hell are these guys coming from! It also indicates that the embarked Marines are now able to project force ashore from the sea base and, once the objective is secured or the mission accomplished, redeploy back to the sea base to await further orders. Command doesn't have to pass ashore, like in the old days.

It has to do with their ability to go further inland than just an amphibious assault.
On a different note...to the guy who compared them to Nazis; the Marine uniforms have nothing whatsoever to do with the Nazi's. They have always had the leather strap across their chest in certain forms of the uniform. They have several different uniforms for different functions. Dress Mess, makes you look like a snobby French waiter, but is still Marine all the way! Try looking at the history of the Marine Corps before you go blasting them, please.

Well Leatherneck, prior to 1965 such units were called Expeditionary, but HQUSMC went all PC about the Viets associating expeditonary with the frogs, so Amphibious became the desig. de Joure
