Neuropsychologists are not medical doctors. They can't prescribe medication or admit someone to a hospital.

Neuropsychologists generally give and interpret psychological tests that show learning and behavior problems and how they might be related to problems in brain function. The tests are more like written and oral exams in school; not like medical diagnostic testing such as x-ray, MRI, etc.

Psychiatrists usually don't do all of those psychological tests, they generally talk to the patient and make their impressions from what the person says and how they appear. A psychiatrist might read a psychological report for additional information. The psychiatrist is a medical doctor and the main mode of treatment is usually medication.

Sometimes the two overlap a little, because both might make the same kind of diagnosis.
