I buy bags of rice and I do not get to eat it all at once. I have found little bugs in the rice and I have ended up throwing all the rice away. can you wash the rice to get ride of the bugs and would the rice still be good to eat. I just end up throwing a lot away. or is there a better way to store it,

If the bugs are alive, then definitely discard.

But if they aren't, the rice is safe to eat if you wash it (The dead bodies usually float up so you can just pour out)

If you cook the rice throughly (well I guess you'll have to since you can't eat raw rice), there's no worry about the bugs. They are not harmful, in any way they just add extra protein to your diet.

Those bugs (I assume they are those little and black ones with tough shells) are usually caused by lack of protection from the processing plant or the packaging, which may also because of the long storage time.

Trust me, for poor people who live in rural area, they would only be happy if they have rice to eat, the bug is not a problem at any mean.

rice gets rancid and stale real fast. It has to be kept in the freezer in freezer bags. As to the little bugs they eat and give off waste. You can pick out the bugs but can you be sure you are getting rid of their waste? After it sits on the rice a long time it becomes more toxic. Really wash it maybe even with dish soap water and then rinse really well. But your best decision would be to get some more and keep it in the freezer.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

I wouldn't bother washing the rice. Just put what you don't use in a ziploc bag and put it in the freezer. Your rice will be weevil free!

Eww...Throw it away if you find the bugs. If you want it to keep longer, store it in the freezer so the bugs can't get to it.

It sounds like rice weevils. There's some info about them, and an enlarged drawing of one, at this link:

I would definitely throw it away. You could try storing it in glass jars with screw-top lids (I'm thinking the kind like you can foods in, Ball containers, you can get them in grocery stores) once you get it home, rather than in plastic bags. I've never had anything get into foods when I store them in those jars! :)
