Now don't get me wrong, I rather like Christians - even the crazy old couple in town who "give support" to people at their little stall. They're most often very nice people but it really grates on my nerves that they have to do the whole happy-clappy-I'm-so-happy routine 24-7 (apart from when they're not doing the shouty Bible Bashing thing).
Smiling and smiling and smiling.. it's just not natural. Are they all a little bit "out of it"?

This is quite interesting, maybe I'm just noticing the "Born Agains" and not the normal (if that's the right word to use) Christians.

I have no idea whether or not this couple you describe have sincere smiles or not, but some Christians do feel like they have to paste on fake smiles and appear happy all the time. The truth is that believers are to "rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep," but that's difficult to do if those who weep keep the weeping hidden behind a phony smile.
I once asked a woman at church who had recently lost her husband how she was doing. She said, "Fine." "Really?" I asked. "No," she said, "but most people expect me to paste on a smile and don't want to hear about how I'm barely getting by."
That's not what the Bible teaches about being a Christian. We are to be, above all, authentic and real. For me that means that sometimes I'm smiling and sometimes not. I do feel a great sense of joy and inner peace that has led some to tell me that I "always seem so happy" even though I don't think of myself as always being happy.

I've been a Christian for over 30 years and just now I'm finding out I'm supposed to be smiling all the time? When do I get my copy of the rule book? Why am I always the last to know?

I believe that the ones who really understand and know God smile because of the Joy that God has put in their hearts. They want to share it with everyone.
Now, Christians don't always smile - there is always a time to be serious about something. But, for the most part, when we don't have to be serious, we just let the joy shine through!

Rev 21:7--God will wipe away the tears from there eyes and there will be no more...crying. Perhaps they're just practicing! I've known a lot of Christians who rather revel in life's trials.

Strange - one of the things I saw in Church (Church of England), growing up was just how miserable everyone looked
These days I'm studying Buddhism & perhaps Buddhists have been accused of smiling "too much". For myself, I can only say - I smile when I am happy, when I have a feeling of serenity.

That's a very big generalization. I'm Christian and I'm not smiling all the time. I'm also not a bible hugger or anything like that. I simply believe. Don't pressure others to, don't care if they do.

You haven't met me then. I feel angry, I feel sad, I feel indifferent, but at the end of the day I know that I have a blessed hope. And that is what puts a smile on my face. God Bless.

somehow i want to laugh... it seems being really being stereotypical to me. trust me. not ALL christians are happy smiley people. maybe the ones you met are coincidentally smiley smiley all the time. but not every christian in this world is always smiling. sometimes they'll have a nasty glare at you sometimes...
