Finch is right. (Sk8ter amused me by saying that her own dog is still dirty but then gives a long winded screed to tell YOU how to sort it!)

YOU CAN and it's pretty easy!
It is called reverse training. Take your dog to wherever you want it to 'perform' and when it does you give a cue word.( I use 'empty') You then give masses of praise...really go over the top with it. Keep doing this until you see the body language change as they prepare to perform...again keep repeating your 'cue' word, then masses of praise.
The example of the benefits of this is when I was police dog handling and I was ,say, called out in the middle of the night to search a large factory. There wasn't time to give the dog a run but to get it to perform before putting him to work was extremely beneficial.
So.. to all those unbelievers out there who will be starting this training today...consistency is the key! You can prove that you have succeeded by given the command after the dog has pee'd and watch him lift his leg and nothing comes out!

Every time he poos or wees say the command (which can be any word you like, but try to choose something you don't usually use around the house), you can give him a small treat after he finished if you want to. Repeat many times and after a while start saying the command right before your dog is about to lift his leg...you will need to be paying a lot of attention and learn the the behaviors he does right before he pees so you can predict it and say the command before he pees, if you are giving treats, only give him treats if he pees after you said the command and not before. Repeat this every single time and you will notice that after many repetitions you will be able yo have your dog pee whenever you as him to.
This is a good command to have in bad weather...so you can go inside sooner! But on normal days try to play or walk more after your dog does his business so he doesn't learn that right after peeing he needs to go back inside, he will start delaying the act if you do that.

Hope that helps!
Always use positive reinforcement to train you dog!

It's easy, don't listen to all those people who say it can't be done. You follow your dog outside and leave him to do what he has to do, when he starts you say a word which you have chosen as the command, do this each time he goes of his own accord and after a short time you can say the word and he will go. it is best to take hime out about 20 minutes after he eats as he will be ready for a poo by then. choose you word carefully it would be unpleasant if you used a word that the vicar may say when he comes for tea as that will make your dog dump on the carpet. :-)

If the dog doesn't need to go then no matter how much he wants to please you he might struggle a bit with that one!!

However when house training a puppy, take him to a designated spot and wait until he starts sniffing (A sure sign that he is going to perform) and use a command word such as "Be Quick" "Hurry up" etc until he performs as soon as he does lavishly praise him. You then need to do that every time he goes out. Be consistent in your command don't keep changing it, and above all be patient he will get the message.

How ridiculous are you. Can you wee and poo on demand?
Take the dog out after each meal, for a long walk, it will empty itself, and get used to doing it when it goes out.

Repetition. When they go to the loo repeat the word you want to use until they put two and two together. My sister managed to train her sheepdog to do this very quickly (to wee anyway).

We had a Westie once as well, the most brainless dog I've ever met! It'll probably take you a lot longer with one of those.

You can train him into a routine, such as toileting after he's eaten or before you go to bed but not to do it on demand. Are you mental or something, why would you want him to do it on demand, it's not a great party trick. If you start trying to make him/her go when they don't want to your going to end up with a very insecure/anxious dog which can lead to a hell of alot of problems.

Hi. Give him/her laxatives about 15 mins before YOU decide the poor thing should wee and poo?? This should fix your dominatrix desires over the poor animal.
Most dog owners take their dogs out a few times a day and they tend to get the jist of it themselves?????

The best way to teach a dog commands is to take something they already do, then give it a name. When your dog goes potty, say the word. With repetition and praise they will learn the word and associate it with the behavior.

you can train for this. get some dog training advice, there should be adverts in local papers. however in the meantime, make sure that there is strict routine about food times and walk times so that there is control over what goes in and comes out. you need to devise a wait to help him learn that you expect that he wees and poos and that its good for him to do it outside and not good to do it inside, so treats for successful eliminations outside in the street. give lots of opportunity to do it outside and there will be less opportunity for accidents.
