I am pretty sure you can get married any time you like now. Years ago there were rules about Lent and Advent but they are now abolished.
I think they will be more worried about you not being Catholic then about it being Advent. That might be the sticking point.

There really are not many weddings during advent, it depends on how strict the pastor of that church is. At least one of you needs to be Catholic, and some churches will not marry non members, again that depends on the church. (Some priests won't marry a Catholic and a non Catholic.)
If you can't marry during Advent, then why not right after Christmas, during the Christmas season (Christmas through Epiphany) there are weddings, and these are always very beautiful. The church should still have all the Christmas decorations so you probably would not have to decorate the church.
The church should be able to tell you all that info and also give you info on the precanae classes you will need before the wedding.
Good luck!

You need a special dispensation to be married during Advent if you are Catholic. Whether or not they'll let you "rent" the church for a marriage I am not sure of. Generally, I would guess not. They are having so many other services etc. during the advent season they really may not have the time even if they were inclined to let you use it. They also consider their altars as sacred places so usually they are not open to any other uses.

To be married in a Catholic church, at least one of you must be a Catholic and you must agree to go to pre-Cana (premarital) classes.
I don't know the current stance on being married during Advent.

I'm pretty sure you can not be married during Advent. I know, (for a fact) that you can't be married during Lent.
I think your mother in law is right on this one. But, check the church to be on the safe side.

Well, if the church set the date for your wedding for mid-December, it seems like it shouldn't be a problem...

It usually is not. I don't know under what circumstances they would allow it, though. However, ask the priest for the procedure in that parish and diocese.
