On 24th December every year, the 3 brightest stars in Orion's Belt, called today what they were called in ancient times, the "Three Kings", line up with Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. This line of four stars points to the place where the sun will rise on the 25th of December, from the point of the Northern Hemisphere. During the sun's "life" it will travel around the sky with it's 12 disciples (constellations). 22nd December, the Winter Solstice. The sun seems to rise lower and lower every day in Winter, until it doesn't perceivably rise any higher for 3 days, and rests on a point known as the Southern Cross, on the 22nd-25th December. With shorter, colder days, this would give the aura of death. After 3 days, the sun rises one degree. "God's son" has been reborn. Now you get the point, here's my question. ----- So, now that we don't have to take Heaven/Hell/God/A big book of sins seriously, doesn't mean we have to give up "love thy neighbour" does it?

It's just that a guy was saying "Why do homosexuals keep doing what they're doing when they know it's a sin" and I thought, if they're not hurting anyone, why should something like Christianity stop them.

by the way, Krishna - Born 25th December, 12 disciples, died on the cross for 3 days then resurrected. Horus (Egyptian god) - Born 25th December, 12 disciples, performed miracles, died on the cross for 3 days then resurrected.

This is more of a diatribe than a question. A lot of semi related facts strewn together to end up with a morality question. I personally think loving your neighbor is a good thing, but also is aided by the use of a good fence. Remember, religion is in no way a prerequisite for good morals. The morality of the bible is quite a heinous one. A god that kills over and over again. It's not conducive to being a good moral leader.

Well, stars in the sky do not change their position (in respect to the other stars) during the year. They do change but it needs a lot of time for this to be visible (thousands of years). So your argument that the Orion Belt stars line up with Sirius every year on the 24th of December ONLY is not true. They do line up but they do it all days in a year!
This is something known to anybody who has with some basic knowledge of Astronomy (not astrology).
Moreover, as the time passes during the night, the stars moves in the sky (due to the rotation of the Earth) on a circular orbit around the Polaris star. This line of the four stars changes position in the horizon (only a tangential to the circular orbit line will not change, which is not the case). So it doesn't point to the place where the sun will rise.

I also like to tell you that the name Orion is not a name of today but is an ancient name. The constellation was called Orion and the 3 stars was its belt also in the ancient Greek times (actually the name is greek and comes from Greek Mythology). The Greek civilization was already spread in the area of Palestine 300 years before the time Jesus born.

Anyway, I am writing all these just to tell you not to believe what you read or hear from anywhere and not to come to easy/fast conclusions about what is true or not.

About "love thy neighbour"... Yes do love him. This has nothing to do with religion.

Okay, Christains celebrate Christ's resurrection on Easter, and Christmas was chosen to celebrate Christ's birth because of the winter solstice, not because that's when He was born. Jesus was probably born in the summer. Just beause somebody can find astrological occurrences that loosely match up with events in the Bible doesn't mean the Bible is about the night sky.

And how do you know there were only 12 constellations in their culture? The seasons are a beautiful motion of the earth, like a big, beautiful piece of organic machinery. Perhaps it's movements are a metaphor for the birth of Christ, I don't know.

Oh...were to begin..........

Christmas is not the birth of Jesus. The church(Catholic?) moved it to coincide with other pagan holidays. This has been widely held for a number of years WITHIN the Christian faith.

Three Kings - is a great Christmas song - but the Bible doesn't say "Kings" or "three"

If you are not a Christian then the "big book of sins" isn't for you anyway, anymore than reading a book of spells or the Koran is for me.

If people wish to celebrate the Winter Soltice that is fine with me, if you want to call the Bible astrological fairytale, okay, but what does that have to do with "love thy neighbor" ? And from your post, I guess you want to keep the judging part, too...

That is not proof, that comes from an elaborately done video that someone took great care in producing; to make it look like the Bible fits astrological signs.

By the way, in the original writings - there were not a number of "Magi or Kings" listed. This is something that has happened over time. The tradition of the number, comes about ONLY because of the number of gifts that were mentioned by Matthew (gold, frankincense, and myrrh); that however does not prove there were only three.

Think about it, these people traveled a great distance, they would have to have food, shelter (tents), and other supplies. And if they were indeed "kings" do you really think a king is going to travel alone? No, they would have many servants with them. Again, there is no number mentioned in the book of Matthew.

There is also something else interesting about Matthew's account concerning the birth of Jesus the Christ. The gold (was used to pay for the trip to Egypt - after Joseph had the dream which told him to take Mary and Jesus there), frankincense (to aniont those who are moving into a new phase of their spiritual life), and myrrh (used by Romans in funerals of that time to mask the smells of burning corspses and an embalming onitment until the 15th century).

Another interesting note is that of the plant itself - myrrh - each branch is full of thrones. Jesus the Christ was given, at His birth the money needed for His family to escape to Egypt and get back to Jerusalem later, the anointing oil for His new spiritual role, and a spice that comes from a branch full of thrones - He died with a "crown of thrones upon His head" and the spice itself was used to prepare His body for burial.

Sorry, but I do not look at things on a horizontal plane, I view things as mountains and valleys. Nothing in this life, is on a straight plane, there are underlying meanings to things. Here's even more compeling or interesting facts about the Bible. In the Hebrew and Greek language - each letter has a corresponding numerical value. That can be added up to mean yet other things.

http://www.accessv.com/~rjchin/numeric/genesis.htm (Hebrew language)

http://www.accessv.com/~rjchin/numeric/alpha/alpha.htm (Greek language)

How interesting that the only two languages, in the world that give their letters numeric values; just happen to be the ones used in the Biblical writings?

Oh, and just in case people want to look at other strange but interesting facts. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I do think this is strange; but it causes you to think. Just check it out for yourself and draw your own conclutions. (It is Food for thought)

J2....

Sorry...doesn't wash... man named the constellations according to their fancy...same as man names the hurricanes, and how people name their "discoveries" (ie scientific, medicine, etc.) by their own names.

God really isn't some "fancy notion", neither is Jesus or the Holy Spirit or the Bible.

Many people whom call themselves "Christian" haven't touched beyond the "kindergarten" stages and are as lacking of understanding what the rest of us are talking about as you are.

Many of you whom claim to be ex-Christians never ventured out of that Kindergarten stage....you know, the (yawn) "ok, did my duty, don't see what all the fuss is about" stage.

Unfortunately, there are people whom are born to it and remained at the same level right up until they die.

Some are simply "good people" with hearts of gold, and probably would have been whether they belonged to a church or not.

No argument there. But, I have seen people whom lived that existence for 50 years and more, and saw how they CHANGED when they were finally filled with the Holy Spirit. Many cried and said they had always felt something was missing but just didn't know WHAT... until they found it.

Their eyes became open, and none liked what they saw in their churches after that...seeing how "dead" people were.

Yes, I said "dead".

They also understood why some had seemed so "different", and were blessed to find they were drawn to one another by the same Spirit....yet, found that suddenly they themselves were treated as though they were "different" by those whom they had considered their "friends" BEFORE the "change".

Some manage to stick it out and helped others to discover what they had found...others simply left that church and wandered to other churches or to none, because they weren't willing to live a lackluster life like the others just so they would "fit in" again.

Those of us whom have "found" what was missing are people whom will not try to cover the light just so we can fit in with the rest whom like the dimness... Scripture begins to be understood at the moment you step out of the kindergarten door...going to a church filled with such people, there isn't any way to find it "yawn...ho-hum..."

...and knowing what we do.... we understand your inability to understand...

We only wish you could ALL find what we have found...and we are praying that you all do....because we really do care.

Peace be with you :)

But don't you see? The Good News IS written in the stars, just as God tells us, that no man may claim excuse. It's called a prefigure, and there are many of them throughout history.

So what part of 'love thy neighbor' is repellant to you?

Biblical archaeology proves that SOME parts of the Bible are indeed historically accurate, but it also proves that some parts are indeed NOT historically accurate... it isn't "just a work of fiction" - some parts of it are correct. As to what you say you must realize that due to the passage of time where the stars rose and set 2,000 years ago isn't the same as where they are now, so I think that throws your reasoning a curve ball that it can't control.

Of course not. Although the bible is a work of fiction, it does contain some good advice; the golden rule is sound psychology.
