The locals know best. They've probably been fishing those waters for decades, they know. Go to a bait shop and ask around. Or go to the fishing locations and ask and watch.

Buy some cigar minnows, or poagies, or small mackerel. What you'll want to do is cut them into big pieces and just cast them out. You may catch a shark, or a mackeral. If you can to go down a little take and egg sinker right before the leader, on the main line, then make the leader. Real easy to cast and will take you bait down off the surface.

Ok, I just came back from beach camping and fishing for last two days in Gaviota SP in Santa Barara, CA. I said the BEST bait for sea fishing is PIKE MACKEREL. Really! A lot of species of fish are attracted to smell of fish oil and pike mackerel has best attraction. I usually fish at piers. I used squid, shrimp, mussel, and Pacific mackerel....but pike mackerel is the best!

(15 Mackerels and 5 Rays)

rag worm, but i don't know if you would be able to get it out there. and how would you ask for it? it is sold near where i live and they wrap it in news paper. Good Luck and have a nice fishing holiday with your son. and of course the lures are fine to use as well, maybe best just stick to them.

Sea fishing with your son, is he the bait you were thinking of? Sounds fine to me.

Try surf clams or on a calm day a top-water lure.
