Why are you using chips in a taco salad...
Crumple up some foil to make foil balls, drape tortillas over them that have been rubbed with oil and bake at 350 for 15 min or so. Theres your taco shell.
Fill it with taco seasoned beef or chicken, refried beans if you like, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato and I like cilantro. Add sour cream, salsa, or whatever else you like.
I'm not sure where or how you were using Doritos, but don't...
Enjoy..

I make edible bowls for taco salad like this:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray an empty 4- to 5-inch-diameter can or baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Drape a large flour tortilla over the top. Bake 8-10 minutes, or until light golden brown. Let cool 5 minutes before removing tortilla from can or pan. Make one for each serving of taco salad.
Then build your taco salad inside the edible tortilla bowls. First, spread beans evenly in bottom of each tortilla bowl. Spoon the meat on top of beans and layer remaining ingredients over top of meat.
It's fun to break off pieces of the bowl and eat them with the salad!

This is off the top of my confused head:
Chop lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, set aside.
Use store-bought package of Taco mix. Combine with one pound of ground beef which has been browned (drain or not is up to you). Follow package directions on the Taco mix.
Simultaneously, heat 6-12 hard taco shells (Old El Paso is fine) until hot (350deg for 15 minutes).
Remove taco shells and crush in serving bowl.
Add Taco mix and ground beef mixture.
Add lettuce, tomato and grated cheese.
Stir quickly.
Place Taco sauce and sour cream in different bowls on the serving table.
Pretty standard, I know but am not sure what you have worked with before.
Good luck!

Taco or tostada shells from the Mexican section of the grocery store. Heat them as directed to bring out the great corn flavor, then allow to cool before using. Much better than Doritos.

No, you're not dreaming. Doritos originally introduced "Taco Bell" flavor but now it's just "Taco". Lol.

I like to take corn tortillas, and cut them up in strips. Then I spray them with olive oil, and a generous amount of chili powder, then fry them in a skillet to make them crisp.
Put these on top of the taco salad.
Hope it comes out great!
