Nails will not give you as much strength to really pluck efficiently. Whether you use a pick or play classical guitar with your fingers, short fingernails are usually recommended for sound and efficiency. They get in your way less too!

I'd recommend a guitar pick, but I think it's the ukulele that requires long right nails. Picks are really cheap and efficient.

If you play classical or country, this might help. If you're into rock or jazz, you might consider using a pick.
