Having a little debate with a friend about labor. We're talking about first labors, but I think if you answer for all babies it would give is a better idea.

1. What week were you in when you went into labor/had baby.
2. How long was labor.
3. Did you use pain meds.

Thanks

Baby 1: I was induced at 34 weeks because she had stopped growing (IUGR), labor was 5 hours 17 mins, no pain meds

Baby 2: Had pre term labor at 24 weeks bedrest until 36/37 weeks Induced at 38 week. Labor was 45 mins from 1st contraction til birth (but was on pitocin for 2 hours previous to that) No pain meds

Baby 3: 37 weeks Doctor broke my water because I had been 4 CMS dilated for 4 weeks. Labor was 6 hours 9 mins. No pain meds

Baby 4: 37/38 weeks woke up with back pain 1 hour later water broke delivered 15 mins later (luckily hospital was only 5 mins away) SO 1 hr and 15 mins I was aware of No pain meds.

Expecting baby #5 in Oct and I sure hope my labor doesn't get any shorter than the last one or I won't make it out of the house!

Good luck on your debate!

My first daughter was born in 1976. It was 4 1/2 hours from the first cramp to holding her. I begged for pain medication and they gave me a shot of Demerol. The only thing that did was slow everything down and make me fall asleep when I wasn't having contractions. The doctor said if I wouldn't have got the Demerol, labor would have been just two hours. No pushing either. Felt great after delivery.

Second daughter was a c-section because she was all tangled in the cord and it was around her neck like a noose. It was an emergency C-section and I felt awful for about 2 weeks.

1. I was in my 39th week (technically) - I gave birth 2 hrs and 45 minutes before my actual due date!

2. My labor was 25.5 hours from the time I started timing my contraction to him being born. 16.5 hours of first stage and 9 hours of pushing (turns out he was stuck and ended up needing a c-section)

3. I had no pain med my entire labor until they wheeled me into the OR. It was not unbearable as long as you learn how to deal with the "pain." I used the Bradley Method of Natural childbirth.

1. I was induced 2 days after his due date (I had gestational diabetes), and he was born the following day.
2. They gave me a pill to soften my cervix at 1pm to start the induction, but I didn't actually start having contractions until 1am. (I got 5 of those pills) He was born at 1pm, so in labor for 12hrs.
3. I got an epidural around 8am at about 4cm dilated.
You're welcome
